Smiles were shining bright at the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine on Friday!

More than 100 third- and fourth-grade students from Carver-Washington STEAM Magnet Elementary School joined us in Little Rock for our second annual Give Kids a Smile event.

Our future dentists made oral health fun with screenings, fluoride varnish applications, tooth fairy story time, face painting, games and plenty of smiles along the way.

It was a wonderful day of learning and service, showing young students that taking care of their smiles can be a positive experience.

A big thank-you to our dental students, faculty, volunteers and event sponsors, Delta Dental, Quality Dental Lab, Arkansas Academy of General Dentistry, Nobel Biocare and Benco Dental, for helping make the day possible!

And the smiles continue! LCSDM will host Give Veterans a Smile from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Nov. 10, in Little Rock. We look forward to welcoming veterans for a morning focused on oral health, care and appreciation for their service.

Thank you to Wildwood Park for the Arts in Little Rock for inviting Kenton Adler, director of advancement for Scottish Heritage at Lyon College, to provide music for its Standing Together: 9/11 Tribute Luncheon on Sept. 11.

The event offered an inspiring message about finding hope and goodness, even in the face of tragedy.

Thank you to Wildwood for including Lyon College in this meaningful day of remembrance.

Today, we recognize someone in our Lyon College community whose actions on Sept. 11, 2001, demonstrated extraordinary courage, compassion and selflessness.

Terry Clausen, who serves in Lyon’s Information Technology department and manages the simulation lab technology at the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine in Little Rock, was a U.S. Army specialist stationed near the Pentagon on 9/11.

Although Terry was off duty and at his nearby residence that morning, he heard American Airlines Flight 77 strike the Pentagon. Without hesitation, he grabbed his medical kit and ran toward the smoke and wreckage to help those who were injured.

As one of the first responders on the scene, Terry treated the wounded and repeatedly returned to the danger zone to carry victims to safety, even after being ordered to evacuate because of the possibility of another attack. He was later selected to coordinate medical logistics and continuation of care at the site.

Terry’s courage and service were recognized nationally. Just days later, he was among a small group of heroes invited to sit with First Lady Laura Bush during President George W. Bush’s address to Congress on Sept. 20, 2001.

Today, we are honored to have Terry as part of the Lyon College community.

Terry, thank you for your service, your courage and your compassion. And thank you for the example you continue to set for all of us.

We remember. We honor. We are grateful.

On Nov. 10, the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine in Little Rock will host Give Veterans a Smile, a free dental clinic providing much-needed care to veterans.

For too many veterans, access to dental care remains out of reach. This clinic is an opportunity to honor their service in a very tangible way, by helping provide the care they need.

But Lyon College School of Dental Medicine cannot do it alone. Community donations will help cover the cost of dental supplies, treatment and other expenses needed to make this clinic possible.

Every gift, regardless of size, can help a veteran receive care, feel valued and leave with a healthier smile.

They served. They sacrificed. Now, it’s our turn to give back.

We were honored to welcome U.S. Sen. John Boozman to the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine and share how we’re building A Culture of Care across Arkansas.

As The Natural State’s first dental school, Lyon is preparing the next generation of dentists to lead with clinical excellence, compassion and service.

We’re grateful to Sen. Boozman for helping secure $15 million in federal funding for much-needed equipment and technology and for investing in Arkansas’s future.

Congratulations to Kristi Price on her appointment as chief of staff at Lyon College!

A valued member of the Lyon community since 2017, Kristi has played an important role in advancing institutional initiatives, supporting shared governance and helping shape the future of Lyon College’s professional schools.

As chief of staff, Kristi will serve as a strategic adviser to President Dr. Melissa Taverner, helping strengthen collaboration, communication and planning across Lyon’s Batesville, Little Rock and Cabot campuses.

“Kristi’s thoughtful leadership and ability to bring people together have made her a trusted colleague across campus,” said Dr. Taverner.

It was great to see so many Lyon College alumni, friends, faculty, staff and Lyon College School of Dental Medicine students at Scots in the Rock last Friday hosted by Lyon College Advancement and Alumni Relations!

The evening began with a welcome from Founding Dean Dr. Burke Soffe, followed by tours of the dental school led by current D2 students. Alumni had the opportunity to explore the facility and see firsthand where the next generation of dentists is being trained.

The event continued at Town Pump, where alumni connected with new Vice President of Institutional Advancement Bailey Faulkner. We were also honored to be joined by President Dr. Melissa Taverner and David Taverner, Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine Dean Dr. Carolyn Henry, LCSVM Associate Dean Dr. Eason Hildreth and Emily Hildreth.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a wonderful evening. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Christmas came early this week at the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine!

Our students celebrated Christmas in July with festive activities, a pizza party, sweet treats and plenty of holiday cheer, thanks to our Admissions and Student Affairs team.
