Learning to read is a complicated process. This is a very simplified graphic from Charge Mommy Books explaining the pillars of reading. They also included a great article that breaks down each one. If a child has holes in those early pillars (sound pieces and phonics knowledge) they WILL struggle!

Whether you are a homeschooling family, a public school family, or a private school family you have undoubtedly heard the term "Science of Reading." Unless you are a parent actively working in education, this term can be confusing.

It is SO important, and unfortunately, weaknesses in this area sometimes get overlooked in the early grades. If not addressed with explicit instruction, these weaknesses will cause major problems down the line.

If you have a child who is preschool/kindergarten age, these are fantastic skills to work on! Phonological awareness only uses sound - no written word - so you can literally practice these skills in the car, while cooking dinner, etc..
