The 19th Annual MLK Spring Marching Band Extravaganza was amazing. Over 700 people showed up in the rain to support their favorite band. The KOH Extravaganza also serves as our band scholarship signing day. Our 20 seniors garnered music and academic scholarships to fine institutions all over the country.

A huge thank you to Dr. Joyce McCall from the University of Illinois School of Music and Prof. Roxanne Stevenson from Chicago State University for stopping by MLK on yesterday to share their wealth of knowledge. Hoping to open a new stream of musical opportunities for our students at both of these fine institutions.

It’s a tradition almost as old as MLK High School itself. The MLK Band Senior Service Award was given to the first graduating class of MLK, the c/o 2004 and the tradition has endured since. The specially embroidered letterman jacket serves as a way to recognize the unique contributions that band students give to the life and culture of MLK High School. Congratulations Class of 2019!

Congratulations to the MLK Wind Ensemble and the Bands of MLK High School on receiving the 2018 Georgia Music Educators Association Exemplary Performance Award. The EPA award is the most prestigious award available to high school bands from GMEA. Bands that receive the award must excel in all aspects of performance including Large Group Performance Evaluation, Solo & Ensemble, All-State and District Honor Band events. The MLK Band also provided evidence of additional band awards, honors, and prestigious performances for the 2017-2018 school year. The band was notified this past spring that it had won the EPA and last night at the band’s winter concert, Cecil Wilder executive director of GMEA, presented the award to Mr. Kimber and the MLK Band.
