I was riding the train one day and a lady was walking through the train cars with her young daughter. The little girl had to be at most 5 years old but she was carrying this heavy looking bag. She stooped over from the weight but didn't stop moving.

Her shoes had one of the soles coming off as if she had walked miles. Her mother was asking for money from the other riders. Many had headphones in and turned their eyes to anywhere but her.

The little girl waited patiently, her hair knotted in the ponytail affixed to the top of her head. She wasn't sad. She wasn't smiling. She just looked...numb.

I felt my heart break for her. I had some extra food with me so I gave it to them. It wasn't enough but it was something. I may not have a lot of money or drive foreign cars or live a lavish lifestyle, but what I do have are eyes. Eyes that see that it could've been me if circumstances were different.
