At the State House and at annual school district meetings this year, voters spoke clearly - they don't want a mandatory statewide school budget cap. But some anti-public education lawmakers won't take no for an answer.

Today, the New Hampshire House of Representatives cast bipartisan votes to sustain Governor Ayotte’s vetoes of seven bills related to public education.

Megan Tuttle, President of NEA-New Hampshire, provided the following statement after the Veto Day:

“All students deserve a high-quality education and the support they need to thrive. We’re pleased that state representatives stood with the vast majority of Granite Staters who support their public schools by sustaining the Governor’s vetoes on seven bills that would have negatively impacted public education in New Hampshire, including efforts to make local school board races partisan, ban books, and make transportation for half-day kindergarten optional.

NEA-New Hampshire will never stop defending against government overreach into public schools and efforts to weaken public education or harm students and educators. We know students thrive when public schools have the resources needed to foster a supportive learning environment. As we enter a new year and a new legislative session, we look forward to working with lawmakers from across the political spectrum to ensure public schools are resourced based on what students need—not political agendas.”

From book bans to requiring high schools to show anti-abortion videos, the votes to sustain the governor’s vetoes were not close and in some cases the House reversed itself and voted in favor of sustaining the vetoes of four bills.

BREAKING NEWS: Today, the NH Supreme Court issued a ruling affirming the State’s failure to meet its constitutional obligation to fund an adequate public education. This ruling is a long-overdue validation of what New Hampshire’s educators, parents, and students have known for decades: our public education system has been chronically underfunded, and the legislature has repeatedly failed to uphold its constitutional duty to remedy that.

Today, Governor Ayotte signed the next state budget into law. While some of the harmful policies proposed by anti-public education politicians were eliminated from the final state budget—including a drastic cut to targeted aid for our state’s largest school district, mandatory statewide school spending caps, and mandatory open enrollment—it still fails to fully fund public education.

BREAKING: Today, the New Hampshire Senate voted on party lines to HB 324, which would ban books in New Hampshire public schools and criminalize teachers, librarians, and even school board members. The state already has an objectionable materials law for public schools that allows any parent to opt their child out of any required coursework, curriculum, or material. But, if signed into law by Governor Ayotte, this bill would go far beyond parental opt-out by potentially imposing one parent’s objections on others.
