Dr. Montessori gave the world a new way of seeing and educating children. She believed that every child is capable and that, when given the right environment and meaningful materials, children can develop independence, confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

She famously said:

“Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed.”

At St. Peter’s Montessori School, we embrace her method because it allows children to be intrinsically motivated, nurtures their natural curiosity, and gives them the freedom within limits to explore and discover the world around them.

Dr. Montessori also reminded us:

“Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.”

What a gift she gave to children—and to all of us who have the privilege of guiding them. Today, we celebrate her vision and continue her work of helping every child discover the potential within themselves.

At first glance it may seem different to see a young child polishing wood in a school these days. Yet after a while, when observing the child at work one may begin to notice the deep concentration, peaceful state, and joyful manner is which he carries on the task. Our student is practicing fine motor skills, focusing his attention, and experiencing satisfaction with his work. This is how Montessori instills a love of learning and nurtures curiosity in early childhood. One task at time, allowing the child to explore and feel empowered while doing what they love. We believe people, kids and adults, have a more meaningful sense of belonging and confidence when they find purpose. This is the gift of Montessori.

Today we hold our first day of chapel for the school year. It is always a great pleasure to listen to the children share and delight in wonder. Please enjoy this sweet prayer from our Chaplain, Rev. Dr. Amy Jacober:

Dear Lord,

You are our first great teacher. Help us as adults to enter into the place of wonder where our children already dwell. Pave the way for curious minds to engage and grow. Support our guides as they prepare and dream of what can serve their classrooms. Give courage and confidence to our parents as they navigate raising these beautiful children into amazing adults. Thank you for how you have provided above and beyond all we could imagine. Let us be a community of gratitude and grace.

Master Morrissette returns today to train with students! We are grateful for our Litchfield Park neighbors at Morrissette Martial Arts. Every year they return to run an after school program right here on campus sharing over 30 years of experience teaching Tae Kwon Do! Students may sign-up for the after school enrichment program and train right on campus after school!

We are very fortunate to welcome back to campus for the 2026-27 school year. Ms. Betsy is the installation artist who created the beautiful structure at the new Litchfield Park Square! She shares her talents with our students after school in her Color Wheels Program. Children get the opportunity to explore their creative minds often making art from every day materials. We are excited to see what will come to life this semester!

Within Montessori, a Prepared Environment is an essential component to effectively deliver Montessori education.
