I am happy to announce the inaugural Matthew Lyons Legacy of Service Award is being opened up for nominations and will be open until July 31, 2026.

In April during our Ransom County 4-H Council meeting we discussed ways of honoring Matthew's legacy. Matt was very community oriented and volunteered for many different things throughout the county and served on several different boards and never expected anything in return.

We live in rural North Dakota where many activities, and events are the results of volunteers around the community. In a Facebook post shortly after Matt's funeral, Sara posted and encouraged people to get involved and don't expect others to step up to make a difference.

The volunteers don't volunteer to be recognized, they volunteer to make an impact and I hope that Matt knew the kind of impact that he had on the Ransom County Community.

With The Matthew Lyons Legacy of Service Award it is our intent to be able to recognize those individuals that give their time and talents and make an impact in Ransom County.

Ransom County 4-H invited members from other organizations that Matt was involved with to serve on the committee and to help promote this award. This also shows that this award reaches past just one group or organization. The following individuals currently serving on the selection committee: Alison Kempel and Eva Bouman, Ransom County 4-H; Jeremy Erdmann, Ransom County Rural Fire Department; Jon Qual, Lisbon FFA; Mike Schwab, Ransom County Farmer's Union; Brent Dick, Lisbon Youth Wrestling; Sara Lyons and Lydia Nord, Matthew Lyons Family Representatives, Brian Zimprich, Ransom County Extension.

The selection committee will meet in early August to select a recipient from the pool of nominations and the individual selected to as The Matthew Lyons Legacy of Service Award winner will be announced at 4pm on Friday, August 28th at the Ransom County Fair at the Ag Country Farm Credit Services Show Arena prior to the Ransom County 4-H/ FFA Premium Sale.

The recipient of The Matthew Lyons Legacy of Service Award will receive an award that they will be able to display, as well as a gift certificate to enjoy a supper out as a thank you for their dedication to making Ransom County a better place. In addition, their name will be added to an honor roll plaque that will be on display in the Ransom County Expo on the Fairgrounds of the Ransom County Fair, and the Matthew Lyons Family will donate $500 to an organization of the recipient's choosing in their name.

Attached is the full writeup for the award as well as the link for the nomination application.
