“Looking at the Earth and the universe from the standpoint of awe, wonder and radical amazement at the grandeur and magnificent mystery of all being. That's what the new bottom line is about.” Rabbi Michael Lerner

This Glorious Cosmic Web

The bird a nest, the spider a web, man friendship.

Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.

The web of life is a perfectly finished work of art…

Robert Anton Wilson

Here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, October marks spider web season. I’m not sure if they’re always there, but something to do with the cool air moving in and the dew collecting in the mornings, certainly seems to make them more noticeable. Intricate patterns woven into the limbs exposed by dropping leaves, the threads of web are jeweled by thousands of little liquid beads reflecting the world back to itself. Some days there are so many, it’s like an art installation was put up while I slept. One after the other, glistening in the gathering light, the artists curled up and sleeping smack dab in the center. Some of them overlap, using the same twig as their foundation, intertwining and sharing space, a whole reality unto itself. Layer upon layer, thread connecting thread… spiders being true to their nature.

In awe of their industry, I contemplate our own. The threads of consciousness that run through our lives and tie us to every thing that ever has been, that is now and will ever be. I see the long arc of justice, and the starts and stops of civilization, the apparent crises that have inspired ingenuity and evolution, the break throughs of bright light that have shifted the way we live… the way we be…

Closing my eyes, I can feel the web of being that is always so perfectly true to itself. All this amazing interconnectivity that overlaps in intertwining oneness. And we are alive in this web. We are its threads, its weavers, and the little beads of dew glistening in the morning light. This glorious cosmic web weaving itself through us, as us. Threads of light and love connecting all that is. Opening my eyes, I know that it is so.

Affirmation:

The web of life is my life: I am connected to all that is by threads of light. I weave webs of wonder, beauty and joy.

Becoming's Invitation

So now I am going to be silent and let that realization take place.

Joel Goldsmith

Every seventeen years, here in Virginia, there is a natural wonder: the return of the cicadas. After a seventeen year gestation period, cicadas emerge from the earth where they have been resting. From a perfectly round hole they crawl as high as they possibly can, to the end of the stem on a rose plant, or halfway up the low part of the trunk of a tree, or to the tip of a stout stalk of corn. And unable to crawl any further, a winged version of themselves wriggles out of a thin place in the back of their exoskeleton. Then, with iridescent wings, they fly to the tips of the branches of the tallest trees. Victorious, they shrilly strum the membranes of their abdomens creating a buzzing drone that vibrates viscerally through the mountains. They mate. Then they burrow into the bark of those branch tips and lay their eggs. The branch tips die. In the first big storm, they are blown from the heights of the trees and fall to the earth. The impact dislodges the larvae which dig their way deep into the dirt… where they gestate for seventeen years.

Apparently, all this takes about month.

The journey is compelling in so many different ways… The aspect that seizes my attention most and sort of freezes up the gears of my often arrogant mind: Seventeen years in the earth, gestating. Can you imagine that kind of patience? That kind of Silence?

This Silence is the divine call of infinity’s becoming. Becoming offers us all gestation. Time to court and then surrender to stillness and Silence. To cultivate that kind of patience and trust and to wriggle out of who I have been, so that the iridescent wings of higher consciousness can use this I Am to serve.

Affirmation:

I accept Becoming’s invitation. I let the Silence of spiritual gestation nurture all that I am. I trust the perfect timing of higher consciousness as it fulfills itself as me.

Each of us is a holographic, reflective expression of our Creator Source. And just as its essence has no label in spite of all those we endeavor to place upon it according to our understanding, we also come into this world “label free.” What we need to cultivate is an “inner-standing” that supports…
