Sometimes the best curriculum extension isn’t in the curriculum. Our Rosie’s Walk unit includes plenty of planned activities exploring things like position, direction, mapping, ramps, and construction, but our teachers know when there’s room to take an idea further. If Rosie can travel over, under, around, and through her world, why can’t we use those words with a Hot Wheels car? Suddenly this idea becomes an experiment in slopes, speed, height, distance, and a whole lot of trial and error. This is how our literature-based curriculum spreads vocabulary, concepts, and imagery into all areas of our day without even feeling like a lesson was taught.

A good book doesn’t have to end when we close the cover. 📚 This month, our Junior Kindergarten block play is built around Rosie’s Walk by Pat Hutchins. After reading about Rosie’s trip across, around, over, past, through, and under the farmyard, we brought the story onto paper, cutting, arranging, and mapping the places she traveled. Literature gives us the starting point. Where we go from there is where things get interesting.

Did you know? Child care affordability may be making headlines, but many Nebraska families qualify for help and don’t realize it.

Nebraska DHHS has expanded eligibility for the Child Care Subsidy Program, which means more working families may be able to receive assistance with the cost of care.

We built a simple tool on our website to help families get a quick idea of whether they might qualify. It doesn’t ask for your name, email address, phone number, or any other contact information. Just answer a few basic questions and see what affordability options may be available to you.

Childhood wasn’t meant to be a race toward worksheets, testing, and sitting still. There is plenty of love for a good coloring sheet in our art room, but there is just as much excitement for a table full of materials with no particular end result in mind. 🎨

Process art gives children the freedom to decide what happens next. Glue, paper, pipe cleaners, pom-poms, craft sticks, crayons, markers, and whatever other admittedly random supplies have made their way to the table are all fair game.

Sometimes children sit at the table and carefully build. Sometimes they spread out. Sometimes they crawl underneath the table because apparently the underside makes an excellent canvas too. 😄

There is no sample to copy and no expectation that everyone’s work should look the same. The value is in choosing materials, trying ideas, changing plans, solving little problems, and discovering what those materials can do.

The finished product might be recognizable. It might not be. Either way, the creating is the point. 💚

STEM doesn’t start with worksheets. It starts small. 🧱

It starts with lining things up, figuring out what fits, testing what falls, building it again, and asking “what happens if…?” Long before children know words like engineering, measurement, balance, or spatial reasoning, they’re already practicing them through play.

At Foundations, we don’t rush children toward school-looking work to prove they’re learning. We give them the time, materials, and freedom to do the kind of work young brains are built for.

A lot of standardized early childhood curriculum is built around prescribed activities with a planned outcome: follow the example, use the materials this way, make the thing everyone else is making.

We do it differently. At Foundations, art is about the process, not producing 12 versions of the same project. Children get real materials, room to experiment, and the freedom to decide what their work becomes. That means more problem-solving, more creativity, more independence, and a lot more personality on the page.

Story time is just the beginning. 📚✨

This week, our preschoolers are studying Puss in Boots by Jerry Pinkney. Throughout the week, they are reading the story, talking about the characters and ideas, and exploring it through different hands-on activities.

They decorated their own boots and explored a plot element of finding fortune with a sensory coin hunt. 🪙 As they searched, scooped, sorted, and counted, they were building new connections to a story they are getting to know more deeply each day.

That is what book study looks like at Foundations. One story becomes conversation, art, sensory play, early math, imagination, and hands-on discovery all week long.

Read it. Talk about it. Play with it. Make it their own. 💚
