Teaching children that effort matters more than outcome changes the way they learn, how they face challenges, and how they build confidence.
In many classrooms and homes, praise still centers on the final product, “Good job,” “You’re so smart,” “That looks perfect.” While well-meaning, this kind of praise teaches children to seek approval, avoid risk, and view success as something fixed and external.
In our society, mistakes are often treated as failures instead of necessary parts of learning. Children quickly absorb this message. A wrong answer becomes something to hide. A messy attempt feels embarrassing. Over time, many children begin to fear trying altogether. They’d rather do something easy than risk getting it wrong in front of others.
But when adults focus on effort, persistence, and strategy, we send a very different message. We teach children that what matters most is the process—how they think, adapt, and keep going. Research by psychologist Carol Dweck has consistently shown that children praised for effort instead of traits like intelligence or talent are more resilient, more willing to take on challenges, and more open to feedback. They don’t fall apart when things go wrong, because they’ve been taught that growth comes from trying, not from being perfect.
There are simple ways to shift the language we use. Instead of “Good job,” try:
“You worked really hard on that.”
“I saw you trying different ways to figure it out.”
“That took a lot of patience.”
“You didn’t give up, even when it got tricky.”
“What part was hardest for you?”
“What do you want to try next?”
These kinds of phrases don’t water down expectations. They create space for real growth. They teach children to reflect, to trust themselves, and to keep learning—not for praise, but for the satisfaction of progress.
Helping children build this mindset takes intention. It also takes adults being willing to reflect on the messages we send, especially in a culture that often prioritizes perfection, performance, and quick results. Children don’t need to be taught to avoid mistakes. They need to be shown that mistakes are part of the path—and that their effort is always worth noticing.

Early brain development is all about building connections through input from the outside world, and music provides a rich source of input as young brains develop.
Exposure to music allows children to soak in the range of notes, tones and words they will later use, and in doing so, build neural pathways that can influence and enhance cognitive ability for a lifetime.
