You don’t need a fancy title or position to make a difference. Impact often comes from small, everyday actions rooted in compassion. This story of Marie, a school lunch lady, shows how noticing a struggling student and offering kindness can create lasting change. The world needs more people like Marie who care. Read Marie's story at https://knslearningsolutions.com/news/2025/04 and ask yourself - How will you show up?

This time of year can feel exhausting and full of doubt, but even when you don’t see immediate results, the impact of your work reaches far beyond what you realize. Read how a phone call from someone deeply inspired by a small action years earlier illustrates the ripple effect of one's impact. Small moments, like offering a smile or inspiring confidence, can create lasting change in ways you may never fully see. Remember, even when it’s tough, you’re planting seeds that will bloom in time. Your work matters more than you know. Hang in there - you’re making a difference.

It’s that time of year again. The end-of-school-year slump. You know it all too well. You’re tired, patience is running low and summer break can’t come soon enough. These last few month…

“If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times.”

Have you ever had this said to you or even said it to someone yourself? This statement is usually said in annoyance and frustration after saying something repeatedly to someone.

But did you know there are times when having to repeat yourself is a necessary and even effective communication strategy with students?

Anyone with kids understands the power of redundant communication. How many children will clean their room the first time a parent tells them to do it? Or even the second time?

If you want a specific message to stick in the brains of kids they need to hear the same consistent message over and over and over from you. Repetition in communication is a tool you should use intentionally with your students.

The idea of communicating a message over and over again isn’t new and its roots are in advertising and marketing. “Effective frequency” is a term used to define the number of times a person needs to hear an advertising message before responding to it. Different experts have different ideas for what that magic number is. The most agreed-upon is probably the “Rule of 7,” which suggests consumers need to hear a message seven times before they will consider taking action.

Applying the “Rule of 7” to the messages you want to have sink in with your students is something to carefully consider, especially if you want them to take certain actions.

The first thing you need to do is determine what the most important messages are you want to have sink in with your students. It’s better to have fewer messages communicated as long as the messages are the most effective at getting the desired behavior you want from your students.

For example, if your goal is to keep your students from engaging in risky behaviors, it is important you are communicating proven, research-based messages. Communicating just any prevention message over and over will likely not reap the results you are hoping for.

The next thing you need to determine is who the most influential messengers of each message will be. The more adults a student hears the same message from validates the message and increases the likelihood the student will believe it and act on it.

Stop and think about how many different adults in one day an adolescent is in contact with who can communicate an important message. A parent, bus driver, carpool driver, custodian, classroom teacher, school administrator, coach, afterschool staff, friend’s parent, adult sibling…the list goes on and on.

Once you determine who the most influential messengers are make sure they are all communicating the same message consistently. An inconsistent message repeated over and over can sometimes do more harm than good.

Now, let’s go back to your goal of keeping your students from engaging in risky behaviors…If your prevention message is delivered by one teacher in your school or organization through a specific prevention curriculum or program and the teacher or the program doesn’t reinforce the same message at least seven times over, then you are not likely getting the best return for your investment. Rather, having more people delivering and reinforcing the same prevention message in multiple ways, in addition to the teacher and the prevention program, increases the likelihood of meeting the “Rule of 7” and getting the behaviors you want from your students.

If you are worrying your students are going to tune you out if they hear the same message repeated too much, don’t worry. They aren’t paying nearly as much attention to your communication as you wish they were. You are likely to get tired of hearing yourself repeat the same message over and over before they do.

So, the next time you find yourself thinking or saying, “If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times,” to your students, don’t be annoyed or frustrated. Just smile and pat yourself on the back. You are doing what you need to be doing.

Last summer I was sitting inside a cool, air-conditioned space, casually sipping on iced tea and watching the world move outside my big windows. It was a sweltering day and I noticed people hurriedly walking down the street, oblivious to the homeless individuals they were passing by. No eye contact. No stopping. Simply pretending not to see them despite their weary expressions and obvious need for food, water or even a kind word.

From my comfortable space, I glanced at the untouched bottles of water in my refrigerator and the stash of protein bars sitting on my counter. It was so obvious. Right there, in my possession, I had an abundance of what they were silently begging for.

Compelled, I gathered enough water bottles and granola bars for each person, walked to the street and offered them one by one. Each person looked me in the eye and said, “Yes. Thank you.” That’s it. They didn’t ask for more. They didn’t beg. They accepted the small gesture with gratitude.

I returned to my room and settled back into my spot by the window. From there, I watched the same people savoring the water and protein bars - simple necessities - while countless others passed by without so much as a glance, as if they were invisible. The thought lingered, heavy and uncomfortable: how many times had I been one of those passersby, avoiding their presence, or worse, failing to notice at all?

This time, I paused and took notice. I couldn’t help but wonder. Who were these individuals? What had brought them to this point in their lives? Their stories intrigued me. Were they facing medical challenges, grappling with job loss or navigating circumstances beyond their control? Did they have families waiting for them? Children depending on them?

When I think about the holidays growing up, it’s not the presents or the decorations that stand out - it’s the kitchen. Growing up on the farm, the kitchen was the heartbeat of our home, particularly during Christmas. I can still picture it vividly. Coming home from school on a chilly day I would step into the warmth of our kitchen where the air was filled with the irresistible aroma of homemade cookies, warm bread or pastries cooling on the counter. They would wrap around me like a comforting hug.

I still recall the smell of breakfast when I was home for Christmas break during my college years - crispy bacon, golden pancakes and buttery toast - would drift upstairs to my bedroom, nudging me awake.

The kitchen wasn’t just a room where meals were made; it was where the magic of the holidays truly lived. These moments and everyday moments in the farmhouse kitchen became the backdrop for some of my most cherished memories growing up.

The kitchen was more than a place for food - it was the heart of our lives. It was where meals were cooked together and shared around the table and dishes were washed and dried by hand after every meal. It was where homework got done, games were played and some of the most life-shaping conversations unfolded.

Our kitchen wasn’t anything fancy. No marble countertops and designer cabinets to admire. Just simple, sturdy white metal cabinets that had seen it all - three meals a day for nine people, every single day. It was small, sometimes too small, and the noise and chaos could sometmes feel overwhelming. But you know what? That little kitchen had a heartbeat. It was alive with the clatter of pots and aromas that I yearn for today. It’s funny how, looking back, it’s not the size or the style of the space that mattered—it’s the memories we built there. Because in the end, it’s never really about the kitchen; it’s about what happens in it.

Looking back, I realize how much that kitchen taught me about resilience, risk-taking, organization, compromise and connection. It’s where I became who I am today. That’s why the kitchen is my favorite room in my home - a place where I retreat to refocus, unwind and reflect deeply whenever I need clarity or calm.

Take a moment to reflect on the kitchen where you grew up. What memories come to life, especially during the holidays? Is it the warm, inviting smell of cookies fresh from the oven? Perhaps it’s the traditional dishes lovingly prepared and shared every holiday. Or maybe it’s the memory of another kitchen - your grandparent’s or a relative’s - where you spent cherished holiday moments.
Close your eyes and let those memories come back. What does your kitchen mean to you? You might find, as I did, that those moments had a lasting impact on who you are today, shaping your story in ways you never realized.

But here’s the question that’s been on my mind: does the kitchen still mean as much today as it did back then? For so many families, life looks very different now. Meals are frequently purchased rather than prepared, consumed hurriedly in the car, on the go or while staring at a screen. The kitchen table, once a gathering place for family and friends, may now be hidden beneath stacks of unopened mail, serving as a temporary office or a convenient drop-off spot.
And I get it - life is busier than ever. Packed schedules and never-ending to-do lists make it hard to carve out those moments of togetherness in the kitchen.

But what if we could bring it back, especially during the holidays? Maybe it starts small. Like sitting down for one family meal a week - no phones, no television, just real conversations. Or inviting the kids to cook with you, even if it means a little extra mess. It could be as simple as baking cookies together or sharing a cup of hot chocolate at the kitchen table after a long day. These small acts don’t just fill our bellies - they create memories, build connections and remind us of what really matters.

This holiday season, may your kitchen transform into more than just a place for cooking - may it become a space where love quietly unfolds. Whether you're simmering a pot of soup to comfort someone after a long day or bringing cherished traditions to life with a recipe passed down through generations, let your kitchen be a source of magical moments and treasured memories. May it foster deeper connections, inspire shared stories over each bite and remind you of what truly matters.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about the perfect cookies or elaborate meals - it’s about the moments, the memories and the love woven into those four walls.

From my kitchen to yours, wishing you a holiday season filled with warmth, joy, and, of course, the sweetest aromas.

Happy Holidays!
