PRAIRIE HILL Learning Center Nature-based Montessori school serving children 18 months- 8th grade on a 12-acre campus near Lincoln There is a big red barn with horses, cats and chickens.

The mission of Prairie Hill is to offer education in an atmosphere that promotes individual growth as well as caring for others and the Earth. Prairie Hill is an independent nonprofit Montessori school founded in 1981. We are committed to environmental sustainability and are Nebraska’s first wind and solar powered school. The campus is focused on the outdoors with acres of open space, woods, trail

s and prairie. We enjoy and learn from our organic gardens and fruit orchard. The children's learning environments include a historic Farmhouse, new Meadow House, versatile Prairie House, and innovative Earth House. Prairie Hill is a year-round learning center offering Montessori programs for children ages 18 months through 8th grade. There are just over 100 students on campus. The individual and small group Montessori instruction within multi-aged communities offers rich social and academic benefits to children. The children participate in planning and cooking healthy meals each day. Their hands-on learning extends to composting, recycling, caring for the animals and earth, as well as participating in service opportunities. Our Lead Guides are all Montessori certified licensed teachers with advanced degrees and years of experience. Prairie Hill Learning Center is an approved private school through the Nebraska Department of Education and a licensed childcare facility by the Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Community partners make Prairie Hill better. 💛🎨

A big thank you to our friends at STUFF Creative Reuse for another generous donation of materials to Prairie Hill, including a recent delivery of paper!

STUFF Creative is a Lincoln nonprofit built around creativity + reuse, giving donated arts and craft supplies another life instead of sending usable materials to the landfill.

Prairie Hill put many finds from STUFF Creative to good use during summer camp, and their donations continue to give our children more materials to imagine, make, experiment, and create with. 🌿🖌️

We’re so grateful to have organizations like STUFF Creative in our community and in Prairie Hill’s corner. Thank you for sharing the good STUFF with us! 💛

Learning beyond the Prairie Hill campus. 🌾

PH Adolescents (7th & 8th graders) are heading off campus each week to visit local businesses and learn directly from the people behind them.

Last week’s stop: A Novel Idea Bookstore! 📚 The students spent time with the team learning about small business and getting a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run a local bookstore.

Yurt day at Prairie Hill! 🌻 🌈

This summer, a Prairie Hill parent heard about a yurt that needed a new home, and it was donated to the school. Last week, our Adolescents got to work bringing it to life, assembling the walls first and then adding the roof.

Once it’s fully stabilized, the yurt will stay on campus and could become a cozy spot for gathering, hanging out, or storytelling.

There’s something pretty wonderful about watching students help build the spaces they’ll get to use. 💛

Today we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Maria Montessori, born August 31, 1870. 🌿💛

Her words feel especially at home here at Prairie Hill:

“There is no description, no image in any book that is capable of replacing the sight of real trees…”

156 years after her birth, we’re grateful for an approach to childhood that recognizes just how much there is to learn from the real world around us!

And boy do we love our PH trees. 🌲

One of our favorite things about Prairie Hill’s annual auction? The experiences that keep bringing families together long after auction night. 💛

This weekend, the Denkers hosted “Fairies in the Flower Garden,” an auction experience filled with flowers, tie dye, and a whole lot of fun. The kids each made a bouquet and tie-dye shirt, shared lunch together, and got a morning with friends while their parents enjoyed a little time to themselves.

These are the kinds of community moments we love. 🌼

One of the coolest things about lunch at Prairie Hill? The kids get to be part of it. 🥕🌿

Our chef, Sara Brown, prepares Prairie Hill’s fruit- and veggie-forward meals, and sometimes the children get to work alongside her to help prepare the food, too.

The students also help to deliver the prepared food to the different houses. It’s real, practical work and another way children contribute to their Prairie Hill community. 💛

And for parents? No packing lunches or snacks every morning. 🙌

Good food, capable kids, and one less thing to pack before heading out the door. We’ll take it!

This is one of the best reasons to bid on a Prairie Hill auction experience! 🌾💛

A handful of Prairie Hill families spent a beautiful Saturday morning together at Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center for one of our annual auction experiences.

The kids grabbed wet nets and explored the pond, finding tadpoles, frogs, fish, and all kinds of things worth a closer look. Then the dry nets came out to catch monarch butterflies, which they helped tag so their data could contribute to monarch research. 🦋

Add in plenty of yummy snacks, a couple of hours outside, and time spent with other Prairie Hill families, and you have a pretty great Saturday morning. 🌿

Auction experiences like this are such a fun way to support Prairie Hill while getting out into our community and spending time together.
