For 35 high‑achieving high school students from across Nebraska, summer break doesn’t mean learning slows down. Last week, students were on campus for the Mid-America Transportation Center (MATC) STEM Academy, an immersive program that introduces future engineers to university‑level research, hands‑on problem‑solving and mentorship from University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering faculty.

Selected from a competitive pool of 76 applicants, the students spent the week exploring engineering disciplines, tackling real‑world transportation and infrastructure challenges and gaining early exposure to the academic and professional pathways available in the College of Engineering. The academy is designed to help students clarify their interests before choosing a major while building confidence, curiosity and a sense of belonging in STEM fields.

Are you drinking too much plastic? A team of University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers, backed by a three-year, $1.48 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, is studying the impact of tiny plastic particles from everyday beverage containers, especially bottles that hold water, soft drinks and takeout coffee cups. The six-person team includes researchers from University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Engineering and the University of Nebraska Medical Center - UNMC. The team aims to offer practical, evidence-based guidance for daily life.

NSF-funded project explores potential ally against harmful algal blooms Toxic cyanobacterial blooms can close lakes, contaminate drinking water and pose risks to human health. A new project at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is exploring an unlikely tool for mitigating these blooms: virovory, the phenomenon of organisms eating viruses as a food source.
