The Great Plains Milestone Award, given by Nebraska State Education Association and the NSEA EMAC, recognizes an individual or group that has promoted human and civil rights in their community.

This year's recipient developed a middle school program to uplift students of color, creating an Honors Cadre - a group of serious students that are being positioned for leadership in their middle schools as well as being supported in differentiated classes.

Through this program, our recipient also helps families to understand and maneuver the difficult path through high school and to prepare for college.

Under our recipient's leadership, the Honors Cadre has grown from one middle school to being active in eight of the district's middle schools.

Our recipient no longer meets with students but with teachers of color. Teachers who were recruited by her or recommended by the school principal. These teachers are trained and coached by her to meet the needs of students.

In recognition of her commitment to helping scholars of color, promoting and recruiting educators of color to the teaching profession, and her work to eradicate discrimination, we present the 2023 Great Plains Milestone Award to NSEA member and the Multicultural Empowerment Coordinator for Lincoln Public Schools, Barbara Miller.

(L-R) NSEA EMAC Vice Chair Christina Running Hawk Ellison, Barbara Miller, NSEA EMAC Secretary Tanishia Jacobs and NSEA EMAC Chair Nora Lenz.
