If you’ve ever heard a sound in the night that made the hair on your neck stand up—somewhere between a scream and a wail—you might have experienced a mountain lion caterwaul.

Mountain lion vocalizations can be downright eerie. Often described as a high-pitched scream, caterwauling is most common during breeding season, when lions are trying to locate a mate or warn off competitors. It’s a completely natural behavior—but hearing it echo across the Nebraska landscape can be slightly unsettling.

Even in nature, there’s always that one relative who does things a little differently.

Meet the Northern Flicker—the rebel of the woodpecker family. While their relatives are busy hammering away at trees, flickers are out here breaking stereotypes… by digging around in the dirt for ants like a feathery anteater.

And if you’ve ever heard their call, you know they sound like they’re laughing at their own life choices. Or maybe at us for calling them woodpeckers when they spend more time on the lawn than in the trees. 🤷‍♀️
