The National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) is the professional association of undergraduate honors programs and colleges; honors directors and deans; and honors faculty, staff, and students. NCHC provides support for institutions and individuals developing, implementing, and expanding honors education through curriculum development, program assessment, teaching innovation, national and internat

ional study opportunities, internships, service and leadership development, and mentored research. More generally, NCHC carries out this mission by serving honors professionals and by advocating support for and excellence in higher education for all students. Within this intellectual environment, members of honors communities demonstrate integrity, respect, and excellence. Through the honors experience, participants realize enhanced personal, social, and intellectual development. The NCHC recognizes the importance of life-long learning and social responsibility in preparing individuals for an increasingly complex world. These beliefs and values are reinforced among member institutions through the collegiality and shared purpose of the NCHC. NCHC is a non-profit (501c3) organization, governed by a 21-member Board of Directors: President, President-Elect, Vice-President, Immediate Past President, Secretary, Treasurer, Parliamentarian, and fourteen professional and student members at large, elected by the NCHC membership. NCHC’s national office and professional staff, managed by our Executive Director, is located on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

From hiking through diverse ecosystems to kayaking the Little Calumet River, NCHC Partners in the Parks students experienced Indiana Dunes National Park through hands-on learning, exploration, and service.

As student participant Carlos Juarez shared, the trip was filled with firsts—from pitching a tent and kayaking with peers to planting native species in the wetlands and sharing meals while watching the sunset over Lake Michigan.
Faculty facilitator Geoff Buckley also reflected on the experience, highlighting visits to Pinhook Bog, hikes on the Mount Baldy and Cowles Bog trails, kayaking on the Little Calumet River, planting native grasses at Great Marsh, and time spent along the beach.

With guidance from National Park Service Rangers and the camaraderie of honors students from across the country, Partners in the Parks created an unforgettable week of experiential learning, new connections, and plenty of memories.

The NCHC Student of the Year Award celebrates honors students who make a meaningful impact on their Honors program and engage with honors at the regional or national level.

Each year, one student from a two-year institution and one from a four-year institution are selected, with each winner receiving $500, along with $500 for their Honors program or college.

Check out the 2025 Student of the Year awardees and nominate an outstanding honors student for this year’s award by September 6!

Congratulations to this year’s Portz Interdisciplinary Fellowship recipients!

Six students were selected for their innovative, cross-disciplinary projects, receiving either a $5,000 or $1,500 award.

Established in 2010 through the generosity of John and Edythe Portz, the fellowship supports creative research that brings disciplines and perspectives together.

We are proud to announce that Marc H. Morial—servant leader, and a leading voice on civil rights, social justice, and economic opportunity—will be a plenary speaker at the 2026 Annual Conference.

As President and CEO of the National Urban League since 2003, Marc has been the primary catalyst for an era of change, a transformation for the 108-year-old civil rights organization. His energetic and skilled leadership has expanded the League’s work around an Empowerment agenda, which is redefining civil rights in the 21st Century with a renewed emphasis on closing the persistent economic gaps that divide Americans.

We are proud to announce that Jesmyn Ward—two-time National Book Award winner, MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient, and one of the most celebrated voices in American literature—will be our keynote speaker at the 2026 NCHC Annual Conference.

Ward grew up poor and Black in rural Mississippi, and she has built a career on ensuring those stories—and the stories of communities like hers—are seen and heard. Her novels, including Salvage the Bones and Sing, Unburied, Sing, have earned her a place alongside the greatest writers of our time.

We are delighted to welcome her voice to our conference.
