Lincoln Nursery School (LNS) is a cooperative, play-based nursery school inspired by the Reggio approach. We are located on the grounds of deCordova Sculpture Park and work in partnership with the Museum. LNS is made up of families from many surrounding towns. The school’s philosophy acknowledges children’s capabilities, creating a democratic and respectful community where ideas are explored with an ongoing journey towards anti-bias education. Children play to make sense of themselves and the world around them. Through observation, listening and reflection, teachers support children’s explorations, developing a responsive and engaging curriculum.

In case you need more reasons to sign up for our day-long professional development conference, “A Movement Towards Optimism: Supporting Intentional Childhood Practices,” consider the fact that you will get to take some much-needed time for yourself by coming out to deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, where you will be surrounded by thought-provoking sculpture, conservation land with trails, wildlife, and nature, thoughtful gifts at deCordova’s award-winning Store, tasty treats from , and much more! It will be a day of inspiration, wonder, and a way to recharge your batteries in a mindful and beautiful location.
This is the context for our amazing keynote speaker Suzanne Axelsson, a stellar slate of breakout sessions from our incredibly talented faculty, and a timely panel discussion on the role of optimism in early childhood education.

What started as pretend play in baking sweet treats for themselves and each other turned into a fully functioning bake shop for children and caregivers that wowed us all! The children in one studio spent weeks planning, practicing, and baking for the grand opening of a bake shop where they sold their goods to siblings, caregivers, and staff. All the proceeds from the day will go to a local food pantry in advance of a larger project the whole school will do in March.

Baking is such a lovely way to connect with young children. They can inherit recipes from their family history, practice fine motor skills with pouring and scooping, and learn about measurements and how to read a recipe and the best part is the sharing of tasty goodies at the end. A perfect winter activity, consider baking with the young person in your life the next time you’re stuck inside!

Our place in the world inspires learning and invites discovery. The flora, fauna, and sculptures of this place provoke exploration and deep questioning about the hows and whys of the world. We talk about the fact that this land has a history and has been home to people for many, many years. We discuss the word “Indigenous” and how it means the first and native people to the land. We explain that Indigenous peoples still live here, and still have their own languages, foods, and traditions.

As we start the month of November, celebrate Native American Heritage Month, and work together to make a brighter world, we share resources with you linked in bio to cultivate your own discussions with your loved ones.
