This is such a cool google slide, created by another teacher...in another state. I wish I could source it to credit her work! Each piece of the classroom links to a read aloud book or video clip that helps open the conversation about race with your children.

It's amazing to see how quickly young kids are able to acquire new skills if they are given opportunities to practice. Don't underestimate your young scholar!

My little scholar has been really interested in counting this month. I'm always amazed by his unique ability to memorize; at this point he can identify any number 1-100. But understanding value is a different story. This month we are working on sorting numbers into groups of 5's and extra 1's. My hopes is that his base 10 knowledge will naturally increase with fun practice. Early practice and screening of math skills may help identify missing skills before students are challenged with new concepts in middle and high school.
Jordan, Glutting, and Ramineni state, "Although there is an upward trend in average mathematics test scores in elementary and middle school (e.g., National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2008), U.S. students still lag behind their counterparts in many other industrialized nations (National Mathematics Advisory Panel, 2008)."

When my reader first started learning sight words, I would choose one word a week to teach. When I would read books, I would stop every time I saw that word, or previously learned words, so that he could read them to me and play a bigger role in our story time.

Write a fry word on both sides of a plastic easter egg. Have your reader find the matches and practice reading, or repeating the word. If they are writers, have them write down the words of the matches they found!

By not teaching letter sounds in alphabetical order, you are providing your child with opportunities to feel success in reading early on. This has potential to encourage their interest in learning more sounds. After a week of talking about 5 letter sounds in fun ways, my son was amazed by his own ability to read short words. It was fun to see the surprise in his face when he realized HE was reading words from his favorite book :)

Another fun activity is to write the high frequency words with white crayon on white watercolor paper. Allow your scholar to paint with water colors to find the secret word 👍🏼

Fry words are the most frequently read and written words. Try to find fun ways to practice. One fun way to practice is to write words on Candyland cards. At my house, I write the words on post-its and put them in different rooms in the house. I say a word, and my little runs to find it. He loves this game, and he's getting some exercise while working on high frequency words!
