The response to my recent posts about adrenarche has been quite overwhelming — and it’s clear how many families are recognising their own children in them.

So, I’m turning this into a new series:

THE ADRENARCHE YEARS — AGES 6–9

We’ll be looking more closely at what is happening during these often-overlooked years — the emotional changes, growing self-awareness, friendships, behaviour, brain development and, importantly, what children need from us as they navigate it all.

Because there is an awful lot happening between 6 and 9 that can easily be mistaken for a child simply becoming more difficult, emotional or challenging.

Sometimes, understanding the why changes how we see the child.

Sometimes the best learning happens when children are simply free to play. 🌿

When children are given the time, space, and freedom to explore outdoors without a predetermined outcome, incredible learning unfolds naturally. A fallen log becomes a balance beam. Sticks become fishing rods or magic wands. Mud transforms into a bakery, a science lab, or a magical potion station. 🌼

Our latest blog explores why unstructured outdoor play is essential for healthy child development and how these child-led experiences nurture curiosity, creativity, resilience, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. 💭

What children need most during the school day. In order. 📐

Notice what sits at the base. Not circle time. Not worksheets. Not calendar drills or assessments.

When physiological needs are met and a child feels safe, connected, and trusted, their nervous system can actually settle enough to learn. Not before.

Then child-led play and outdoor time whenever possible. We would actually encourage merging these two whenever possible (child-led play outside), but recognize that outdoor accessibility looks different depending on your setting and community). Then teacher-guided experiences. The smallest slice for a reason.

Notice what isn't on here at all: Circle time. Worksheets. Calendar drills. Assessments. Flashcards. Not an accident.

The order matters more than we were taught. When children are dysregulated and disengaged, the answer is almost always found at the base of this pyramid, not at the top.
