Tomorrow, July 31, is the deadline to nominate a colleague, mentor, and/or friend for the Bernthal-Beukelman Memorial Service-Leadership Award 🏆

The Bernthal-Beukelman Memorial Service-Leadership Award

Dr. John Bernthal and Dr. Dave Beukelman were committed to serving others and providing leadership in their professional and personal lives. They embodied the principles of service leadership, which occurs in those who have the heart to serve, answer the call to lead, and have the courage to engage.

Dr. Bernthal and Dr. Beukelman characterized servant leadership by demonstrating humility and putting others first, listening and not judging, trusting others and being trusted, and caring for and valuing the people they served.

As servant leaders, Dr. Bernthal and Dr. Beukelman directly and indirectly impacted and forever changed peers, colleagues, undergraduate/graduate/doctoral students, clients, families, the profession, and their communities.

In 2023 the Nebraska Speech Language Hearing Endowment Fund board established the Bernthal-Beukelman Service-Leadership Award in memory of Dr. Bernthal and Dr. Beukelman to honor their contributions and encourage others to follow in their remarkable footsteps.

Description of the award
· This non-monetary award honors a Nebraska speech-language pathologist or audiologist who has provided meritorious service and demonstrated outstanding leadership in communication disorders.
· The recipient must have served and led at state, national, and/or international levels.
· Any Nebraska speech-language pathologist or audiologist may nominate a colleague for the award. Self-nominations are not permitted.
· Nominations must be submitted to the NSLH Endowment Fund Board by July 31 of each year.
· Award recipients will be selected by an NSHL Endowment Fund committee.
· The award will be announced and presented at the annual NSLHA convention.

Thank you to our Nebraska Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSLHA) Student Liaisons for hosting the 50/50 raffle table at the 2025 NSLHA Fall Convention. From setting up to engaging with attendees, these student leaders brought energy, organization, and enthusiasm to every part of the event.
