March is Music in our Schools month. Many of you know that music education especially for littles is my passion. I can talk about it for hours. It is interesting how my philosophy has changed over the years. I used to want to prepare all my kiddos to be professional musicians and while I still hope I turn out some professional musicians (teachers, music business, church musicians.) I now find myself working hard to help all my kiddos access music-sing in a light head voice, move to the steady beat, and have an appreciation for music. I want my students to feel comfortable singing happy birthday and clapping to the fight song at a football game. I want them to take their children to music events because they understand the joy that music can make you feel.

I don’t believe that learning music should come from a book or from a screen. Students need to move (a lot) and play while they learn. So, this month I am hoping to give you a little insight into what you might find in my classroom.

In Music class we typically do an activity 3-4 rotations. Each rotation we change up the activity a little. We add motions, props, instruments, dancing, etc. By the time we are doing the activity for the last time the students know it backwards and forwards. I am able to step back and watch while the students take over and run the activity. It brings me so much joy to observe them making music. These second graders were rock stars.
