When I first entered the teaching profession, competition was tough. Armed with a fancy resume and the best outfit I could find, I drove hundreds of miles from Florida to North Carolina, ready to face the very competitive landscape of teacher job fairs. Yet, despite my eagerness and education, I was met with a disheartening reality—“sorry, no vacancies.”

Fast forward to today, and the reality couldn’t be more different. What was once a competitive field has now become a desperate scramble to fill classrooms. Gone are the bustling job fairs; in their place, we rely on Facebook posts and billboards, hoping to entice anyone willing to step up and lead a group of students. And not any group of students, a group with unprecedented challenges. Students that experienced social distancing and learning from home and students that are exposed to a world of information that their young minds may not be equipped to navigate.

I can't help but feel a sense of urgency. Education is the cornerstone of society, yet it finds itself under siege.

I love education! I love being a teacher! I love our children! Friends, what are the next steps?
