This morning, the Board of Land and Natural Resources will consider a decision that could shape the future of East Maui’s wai for the next generation.

A Canadian investment company doing business as Mahi Pono wants to bid for a long-term license that could give it access to nearly 88 million gallons of East Maui water a day for the next 30 years.

Mahi Pono wants to remain the long-term licensee. But Maui voters created another path.

In 2022, more than 64% of Maui voters supported creating the East Maui Community Water Authority, a public entity established to manage East Maui’s water system in the public interest.

Today, Hawaii DLNR (Department of Land and Natural Resources) and Chair Ryan Kanakaʻole have a choice: continue a century-long legacy of private control over East Maui’s wai, or help empower the public authority Maui voters created to steward it.

Wai is not simply a commodity. Wai is life. Wai is a public trust.

Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea teaches us that the loss of sovereignty need not be permanent.

In 1843, our kūpuna witnessed our beloved hae Hawaiʻi rise again and our governing authority returned. They celebrated not only a symbolic raising of our hae but also the true restoration of their collective ability to determine the future of our cherished ʻāina and lāhui.

Today, Ke Kula ‘o Kamehameha, Papa Ola Lōkahi, and Department of Hawaiian Homestead Lands are being forced to defend their very foundations in courts belonging to another nation.

We must stand firmly in their defense.

These cases also require us to confront a deeper truth: protections granted or recognized by another government remain subject to that government’s changing laws, leaders, interpretations, and courts.
Ea offers a more enduring horizon.

Ea is the political capacity of a people to define itself, govern its resources, carry forward its kuleana, and create the conditions in which future generations can thrive.

The form of restored Hawaiian governance must be shaped through serious consideration, broad and deep conversation, and purposeful building of our collective will and strength to stand up a diverse and inclusive nation that continues to honor unbroken kuleana to ‘Ōiwi. The need for that work has never been clearer.
We are not merely defending programs. We are defending the right of our people to have a future and the ability to rebuild the ea necessary to secure it.

Ānuenue Pūnua and her daughters reminds us, a lei is so much more special when it comes from you and the materials come from this ʻāina.

Though not native to Hawaiʻi, pua kenikeni is beloved for lei-making because of its strong fragrance and color-changing blossoms. Individual flowers were once sold for ten cents, or “kenikeni” in Hawaiian Pidgin, hence the name “pua kenikeni.”
