Week 5️⃣ of S.I. Pāpala Lele Early College Internship started off with learning how to gather, propegate, graft and air layer native plants in the lower preserve. Followed by some loʻi maintenance with Unko Mikey and learning about creating traditional habitats (imukai) for iʻa and limu. Our interns finished off their final week in Hāʻena with a custom, guided art session with Holly Ka'iakapu and presenting their amazing final projects to their ʻohana and kupaʻāina of Hāʻena at their hōʻike! As another Pāpala Lele Internship comes to an end, we are filled with gratitude and humility for all the ʻike and kahiau imparted upon us by ka poli lauaʻe o Makana. Week 4️⃣ of S.I. Pāpala Lele Early College Internship was another one for the books! We started off the week building pilina with the Waipā interns and was blessed to spend 3 days on the ʻāpapa with limu legends, Unko Wally and Aunty Pam of the Limu Hui. We learned how to identify, properly harvest, clean and prepare limu and explore the reproductive systems of nenue. We also had a special visit from some Maori cousins shared in a feed together and some hana noʻeau. We ended the week working on final projects with Kumu Keolamailani💚 and exploring artifacts in the Kikuchi Collection. Gearing up for our final week 5️⃣…lesssgoooo!!! Week ✌🏾S.I. Pāpala Lele Early College Internship. Haumāna started off the week with the Limahuli Garden and Preserve Horticulture team eradicating invasives, planting natives, mulching and learning proper pruning techniques and safety protocols. They were fortunate to learn the skill of 3D topographical mapping from Kumu Josh and wala’au with Kumu Mehana, the author of Kaiāulu, their IS 201 text. They ended the week with moʻolelo, wahi pana and survival skills 101 with Kumu Lei. We rounded out the busy week with IS 201 coursework and project outlining with Kumu Leiʻohu. We snuck in some kai photoʻs of reef monitoring and observations from last week. Whewww✌🏾weeks down 3️⃣more to go!!
