Dawson has never slept well. For the first year of his life he sleep in my arms. Since then he has had more bad nights than good. It’s pretty common and standard among those with CP to not sleep well. His neurologist wants to make sure there aren’t any underlying reasons as to why he doesn’t sleep. We definitely don’t want to resort to more medication. Here is hoping he will actually sleep long enough to get some readings. Pretty sure he is not comfortable!

Dawson finally got his AT Eval at school and got his first communication device! His teacher said he pushed “Hello my name is Dawson” around 512 times! Can’t wait to hear all he has to say one day!

For anyone interested in how Dawson sees. His vision isssues are obviously related to his traumatic brain injury and not his eyes. Classic symptoms related to his neurological visual impairment are visual latency, which means he needs sufficient wait times to localize and then fixate on an object, which is characterized by him looking at an object and then looking away to process it before he will look back to fixate in it, and difficulty with visual novelty. Which means he prefers objects he has viewed enough to recognize and doesn’t like objects that are new. Complex items are also hard to interpret. His progression through “learning to see” has changed drastically due to early intervention. It used to take him days of exposure to new items before he could truly process them. This birthday balloon has been hanging above his chair since his birthday. So for 6 days now and he has never noticed it because I never presented it to him. After presenting it to him multiple times and him processing it you can physically see how much easier it is for him to process and recognize an object and then become interested in it. He now knows that it is floating above him when he never did before.

The last few weeks have been busy. Just like I’m sure they have for everyone. We traveled across the state for a week to see family, we love going to school and we got glasses. The next week will be even busier. Dawson will be having surgery on Wednesday. We appreciate any prayers as this approaches. We love our happy boy.

It has been a minute since I have posted updates on Dawson. 2020 was a weird year for us just like everyone else. He is doing good and went to school all year long. Our family has recently moved and because of that Dawson lost his amazing nurse. Asking for my favorite Dawson prayer warriors to pray. Nurses are not working in home heath and there is a major shortage across the board. We have talked to numerous home health companies and there are a ridiculous amount of families without a nurse. We are one of those. I start work in 2 weeks and have no one to take care of him. He starts school in 3. Please pray that there is a nurse out there for him!
