On this day, 82 years ago, the turning point of World War II began. D-Day officially commenced shortly after midnight on June 6, 1944, with airborne assaults and paratrooper drops behind enemy lines.

Our KA brother, General George C. Marshall (Beta - VMI 1901), was serving as Army Chief of Staff. It was his idea, supported by Roosevelt, to amass troops on Great Britain and invade the beaches of France. Indeed, he was ultimately the person who would be given the opportunity to command the operation, but he left the decision up to Roosevelt. The President considered Marshall too important a strategist at 63 to send back into the field, and is quoted as saying, "I feel I could not sleep at night with you out of the country."

There is much more to Marshall, WWII, and Operation Overlord. Further, Google our brother George S. Patton (Beta - VMI 1904) and learn how the leaders used him and a fictional "First Army" to throw the Germans completely off track. He was so feared that our enemies thought what ever he was doing must be the next "big" plan. D-day was the real plan. We humbly honor all our veterans today, our lost loved ones, and in particular, that greatest generation who stormed those beaches in the hope of freedom for all.

Below is a personal communication from Eisenhower to Marshall on D-Day. They were close friends and together, along with many great minds and strong convictions, helped save this world from tyranny.

On this day in 1947, our very own KA alumnus, then U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall (Beta–VMI 1901) delivered a speech at Harvard University, where he outlined the Marshall Plan, also known as the European Recovery Plan. This funding helped rebuild Western Europe after the devastating effects of World War II.
