Before there were stadiums and television, there were the “Four Heavenly Kings.” These were the men who fought to prove that Jigoro Kano’s Judo was the ultimate martial art.
Shiro Saigo, Tsunejiro Tomita, Sakujiro Yokoyama, and Yosh*tsugu Yamash*ta. In the late 1800s, these four warriors took on the toughest Jiu-Jitsu schools in Japan to defend the honor of the Kodokan. They weren’t just athletes; they were pioneers who lived in a time where a match could decide the future of an entire discipline. Their victories are the reason we bow onto the mat today. Without their courage, Judo might have remained just a dream in Kano’s mind.
“It is not about being better than someone else; it is about being better than you were yesterday.” — Kodokan Philosophy
