The best teachers have a way of staying with us. For Transylvania professor Zoé Strecker, one of those teachers is Kentucky writer, farmer and environmentalist Wendell Berry — who first influenced her through his writing, then became her professor, mentor and friend.

In her essay “Wendell Berry and Me,” Strecker reflects on the many ways Berry’s influence has followed her through a life of art, family, farming and teaching — including into her own classrooms at Transy.

“I am eternally grateful for how his instruction continues to shape me,” she writes. “I consciously attempt to echo that constructive approach to education in my engagement with students.”

It’s a beautiful reflection on the people who teach us, the places that shape us and what we carry forward.

Not to brag, but Transy gets named one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country for good reason. And fall around here is kind of a show-off. The leaves are about to change on our downtown Lexington campus, so if Transy is on your student’s list, this season is a very good time to come see what all the fuss is about.

Yesterday was Bid Day at Transy, as our newest sorority members ran home to their chapters — and to plenty of new friends waiting to welcome them.

The stage is set for an afternoon of big ideas at Transy.

Playwrights Naomi Wallace and Ismail Khalidi come to Haggin Auditorium for “Future Occupations and the Ghosts of Kentucky and Beyond.”

Presented in collaboration with Transylvania’s Theatre Department, the event is open to students, the campus community and our Lexington neighbors. Transy’s Creative Intelligence Series brings artists, scholars and thought leaders to campus to share fresh ideas, spark conversation and explore the world from new perspectives.
