Here’s a peek at a Transylvania University classroom from 1936. Back then, we were known as Transylvania College!

Apparently “Chuck” was busy testing out those bubble letters on the old chalkboard… but it looks like everyone else was hard at work.

Transylvania University joins our alumni community in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Cara Elizabeth Richards.

As a beloved faculty member from 1967 to 1994, Dr. Richards exemplified the values of scholarship, curiosity, and service that define our institution. Her influence reached far beyond the classroom, and she will be remembered with great gratitude and respect.

Dr. Cara Elizabeth Richards, Transy faculty emerita, passed away at the age of 99 on Thursday, July 30. Cara was a beloved professor of sociology and cultural anthropology, and taught at Transy from 1967-1994. She attended both Columbia University and Cornell University for her undergraduate and graduate degrees, respectively. She was a scholar, an author, a traveler, a singer, and a lover of Transy and its students. Please share any memories you have of Dr. Richards in the comments. She will be deeply missed.
