Students in Prof. Moffa's Comparative International Education course discuss impacts on the achievement gap (Is it the failure of schools or factors outside schools?). One strategy for discussing controversial topics is the Structured Academic Controversy method. In this method, teams of two prepare and present an argument to an opposing team of two, then listen to the position prepared by the other team. Next, they switch positions and try to strengthen or extend the other team's argument. Finally, they work as a group of four to build a consensus on the issue. This strategy fosters deep understanding of multiple viewpoints and perspective-taking. It also limits combativeness. If you aren't sure how to introduce controversial issues into your classroom, this method works! Give it try!

EDUC 340 students in Professor Haley Sigler’s class recently visited In a Classroom at the Staniar Gallery, where the exhibit sparked thoughtful conversations about teaching, learning, and what it means to be in a classroom. Many thanks to Professor Andrea LePage for sharing the show with our Education Studies students and helping us think differently about classrooms as spaces for experimentation, performance, and reflection. Check out the exhibit at Staniar Gallery through February 6th.

The Education Studies Program is excited to sponsor In a Classroom, a thought-provoking installation by artist Joey Fauerso, on view January 8–February 6 at the Staniar Gallery.

The work invites us to think about classrooms not just as places of learning, but as spaces that shape students’ bodies, identities, and experiences. It connects to the questions our Education Studies students explore about classroom environment, community, and how learning spaces support (or limit) children.

Peer teaching is a learning activity where students teach other students. This allows them to practice pedagogies and share in deep reflection on instructional design choices. Engaging in authentic teaching skills in a supportive setting develops their capacities to become reflective, collaborative educators.
