As we head into the weekend, Winter Storm Fern is expected to move through our area and could bring a serious mix of snow and ice from Friday through Sunday (January 23–25). Some forecasts are even suggesting heavy accumulation or icing that could make travel unsafe and possibly affect power in our city.

We want you to be prepared—and more than that, we want you to know you’re not alone. Please take a little time now to get ready and reach out if you need help.

A few things to prepare ahead of the storm:
• Warmth & heat: extra blankets, warm clothing, and one room you can stay in if power is lost
• Light & power: flashlights (instead of candles), fresh batteries, fully charged phones, and a battery pack if you have one
• Food & water: at least three days’ worth of simple, no-cook meals and bottled water (don’t forget a manual can opener)
• Health needs: refill prescriptions, keep a written list of medications, and have a small first-aid kit ready
• Home safety: salt or sand for steps and walkways, allow faucets to drip if temperatures drop, and know where your main water shutoff is
• Generators: if you use one, it must be operated outdoors only—never in a garage or enclosed space

If the power goes out:
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible
• Use flashlights rather than candles
• Check on a neighbor if you are able, especially anyone who lives alone
