NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, Davidson County NC State Extension partners with communities to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land and economy of North Carolinians.

NC State Extension Master Gardener volunteers empower citizens to cultivate healthy plants, landscapes, ecosystems, and communities through volunteer service that delivers research-based information, educational programming, and community outreach. The NCCES, established in 1914, was authorized by the Smith-Lever Act and designed as a partnership between the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), North Carolina State University, the land grant university (authorized by the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890), and local government. This federal/state/local partnership provides a network of professionals in every county in North Carolina. Since 1979 NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers have been guiding homeowners in making environmentally sound decisions in their gardens, lawns and landscapes. North Carolina Extension Master Gardener Volunteers are a crucial part of the NC State Extension mission throughout North Carolina, partnering “with communities to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land and economy of North Carolinians.” Under the auspices of the NC State Extension, the mission of the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers is to learn about issues related to urban horticulture that are unbiased, research-based, practical, and environmentally sound, and to educate the community on these issues.

Get a group of MASTER GARDENER volunteers together for a field trip to learn about the life cycle of Monarch Butterflies and you have a good time!! All A Flutter Farms LLC in High Point, founded in 2001 by owners Nora and Brandon Aker, showed us that education IS fun because we are "forever old kids." Nora used various props AND members of our group to explain and engage us in an immersive experience with butterflies....learning about eggs, caterpillars, chrysalis and adult stages of their lives. Their favorite food was discussed - milk w**d! Tips on how to create an environment in our own yards to attract Monarchs were given and some attendees were fortunate enough to be able to purchase plants.

Remember that today, August 24, is the last day of the Great southeast pollinator census! You have until sundown to take your census and you have a few days to upload it. Or, you can bring it to the Ag Center at 301 East Center St. Lexington. The collection basket is just inside the front door. Thank you!
