Lewis Honors College

Lewis Honors College Honors provides an environment for the best and brightest students to push themselves and each other.

Each Honors student completes at least 15 hours of Honors courses in a flexible curriculum. Courses include small-group seminars with leading faculty in the arts and humanities, and the social, natural and physical sciences, and interesting courses from disciplines across the university’s undergraduate colleges. A senior capstone or thesis that brings focus to your learning is also required. Additionally, Honors students have wonderful opportunities to participation in Honors Education Abroad, Honors Research and Honors Service Learning.

How can a class paper come to life and make a difference in the community?

Watch this clip of Lewis Honors College student and Otis A. Singletary Scholar Katie Neglia describe just that! Click the link in the bio for the broadcast.

As a College of Health Sciences student, Katie took “Social Determinants of Health” with one of her favorite professors, Dr. Brendan O’Farrell. Instead of simply writing a paper about improving health literacy, she turned her ideas into action with the help of other UK students—building a Little Free Library and placing it in the University of Kentucky Arboretum.

For Katie, the project was a reminder that meaningful change can start with an idea and be implemented with hard work.

Nearly 200 attendees came together for “The Keeping Space”, a film screening hosted by the Lewis Honors College that celebrated Shelia Lackey and offered a meaningful look at kindness, community, and the work that often goes unseen.

Dr. Jena Seiler reflected, “It was a joy to sit amongst students, faculty, and staff and give our attention to Shelia. She teaches us so much about the exertion, effort, skill, knowledge, and rhythm of cleaning; about humility and kindness; and about how we might live better together.”

Dr. Pearl James shared, “It was a great chance to learn about an important member of our community and appreciate Jena's cinematic storytelling in one fell swoop. I think we all came out reminded of how we need to treat each other—with kindness and respect. “

Reflecting on the evening, Shelia said, “I was overwhelmed, and I got emotional because I never knew that the students were paying attention to what I do on a day-to-day basis.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special evening and helped celebrate an important member of our community.

The Otis A. Singletary Scholars ’29 cohort took their learning beyond the classroom for a day of team building, adventure, and connection at the Life Adventure Center!

From climbing and ziplining to tackling challenges together, the experience gave scholars a chance to step outside their comfort zones and strengthen the bonds they’ve built as a cohort.

“I really felt like it brought us together as a class in meaningful ways and expanded our knowledge of what it means to truly work as a team,” said Braley Howard.

For Davanna Grubb, the experience reinforced the sense of community within the cohort: “People will always have your back, which makes the connection that you have even better than what you already have.”

More than a group of classmates, the Singletary Scholars ’29 are building a community that supports one another through challenges, celebrates successes, and creates connections that can last well beyond their time at UK.

Meet Kasey Clark, a junior business management major from Louisville, KY! This summer, she returned to WesBanco for her second internship, working as a teller and helping customers with transactions, loan payments, and more. The experience sparked her interest in banking and showed her how she can make a difference by helping people in everyday ways. After graduation, she plans to work in HR. Her advice: “My advice is to just choose something! You get three summers in college, so just have fun and pick something that you're interested in at the time.”

This is Christian Kantosky, a senior journalism and economics double major with a minor in Spanish from Bowling Green, KY! This summer, he interned as a photography intern at The Boston Globe, covering everything from World Cup games and Red Sox history to climate issues and LGBTQ+ stories. The experience strengthened his storytelling skills and prepared him to pursue a career in photojournalism after graduation. His advice: “Make the most of the experience no matter what your career path may be.”

Three Lewis Honors College students — Keanu Kawata, Jack Bolyard, and Ryan Hidek — were recognized on the field during the first home game for their participation in UK Invests, an initiative that helps students build financial confidence, develop healthy habits and make the most of their UK experience.

For Keanu and Ryan, the recognition was more than a moment in the spotlight. It was also a reminder of the sense of community they’ve found at UK and within the Lewis Honors College.

“I enjoy being surrounded by other motivated students who are involved on campus and want to make the most of their college experience,” Keanu said.

Ryan shared what makes the LHC community special to him: “Everyone in the LHC I meet is so kind and thoughtful, whether it’s a faculty member or a student.”

Meet senior Bella Dunn, a public health major from Salyersville, KY! This summer, she interned at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, where she worked in the Office of Communications, Information Technology and Center Engagement & Business Integration Services. There, Bella met the SpaceX Crew 11 and Artemis II astronauts! After graduating, she plans to get her master’s in healthcare administration. Her advice: “Take chances and do hard things!”

Seven UK students and recent graduates have been named Fulbright recipients—and three are Lewis Honors Wildcats!

Congratulations to Owen Chesemore '26, Gabrielle Drake, and Jesse Lee '26, who are the three Honors alumni selected for the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

For Owen, his Honors experience helped spark his interest in teaching in the Czech Republic.

“Through the classes with Dr. Ryan Voogt, I studied the historical developments that shaped Europe, including the Czech Republic. This understanding fueled my interest not only in teaching in this country but also in dedicating my time to studying its history and culture.”

For Jesse, experiences beyond the classroom helped him connect academic learning with service. His service-learning courses were particularly meaningful.

“Serving as an English tutor for Hispanic immigrants in ‘Exploring Refugee and Immigrant Lives’ by Dr. Julie Boutwell-Peterson and developing a project for CivicLex through Dr. Kim Stoltzfus’ ‘Project Management’ class equipped me with the skills and experiences to bridge academic study with practice to serve my community.”

We’re proud to see purpose, intellect, and integrity. in action as these Honors Wildcats take their learning into the world.
