Each week, a team of volunteers harvests produce from the Home Demonstration Garden at The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky, that then goes to Glean Kentucky to feed local individuals and families facing food insecurity.

Julie Dunn, one of the volunteers, said she loves volunteering. Not only does she know that she's helping others, but she has also learned so much about gardening.

"When I worked this vegetable garden for the first time, it just really clicked," she said. "I love it."

Visitors to The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky, can now take or leave a book from a Little Free Library.

This project began as a class paper by University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences student Katie Neglia about how to improve health literacy in creative ways. Because Neglia was involved with research, she brought her idea to Haven Patrick at the UK Office of Undergraduate Research.

The Arboretum, where Neglia has volunteered with children’s programming, seemed like “the perfect spot." Arboretum Director Michael Wall said the Little Free Library is a fitting addition to the Arboretum.

"Our core mission is to educate, inspire and enrich the lives of our community,” Wall said. “Integrating health literacy and accessible reading right outside the Kentucky Children’s Garden extends our educational impact beyond plants and ecology, supporting the overall well-being of the families and kids who visit us every day."

For students seeking a flexible, high-quality pathway to becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, the University of Kentucky Department of Dietetics & Human Nutrition has launched an online Bachelor of Science in Dietetics: Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).

“In response to the growing need for dietetics professionals equipped to address diet-related health outcomes in the region, the program meets workforce needs while maintaining the rigor, engagement and student support that are key components of success across all our dietetics programs," said Julie Plasencia, DPD director at Martin-Gatton CAFE.

This year, The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky has already donated more than 1,100 pounds of produce from its Home Demonstration Garden to Glean Kentucky to feed local individuals and families facing food insecurity.

Michael Wall, director of The Arboretum, said this project is a great example of our mission to improve the lives of all Kentuckians — from Arboretum visitors who learn from the garden to volunteers who give back by harvesting to recipients of the fresh produce.

For 30 years, fourth graders across Ohio County have climbed off school buses at Luttrell Farms and into a day designed to help them understand agriculture and food production in their community.

Ohio County Youth Ag Days began with a simple question posed by the local Cooperative Extension Council: How can our students better understand where their food comes from and the role agriculture plays in their community?

This week is Kentucky’s All in for Agriculture Education Week, a partnership led by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to increase access to agriculture education within the Commonwealth. Programs like Ohio County Youth Ag Days show how crucial agriculture education is.
