Tales from the Near Side: The Life and Art of Carleton Wing
Carleton Wing is remembered as one of Lexington's most imaginative and talented artists. Although he spent much of his professional life working as a technical writer for IBM and later Lexmark, he was always an artist first. Beginning in the early 1980s, he devoted himself to a creative practice that would continue to evolve for nearly four decades, producing a remarkable body of work that reflects both his curiosity and his distinctive way of seeing the world.
Entirely self taught, Wing developed a visual language rooted in collage, digital collage, and assemblage. Drawing from antique photographs, historical imagery, architecture, animals, machinery, and fragments of printed ephemera, he transformed familiar objects into richly imagined narratives. While Surrealism remained an important influence throughout his career, his work was never defined by the movement alone. Instead, he created compositions that balanced humor with mystery, inviting viewers to uncover unexpected relationships between history, memory, fantasy, and everyday life. As his practice evolved, he embraced digital technology while remaining committed to the careful craftsmanship and storytelling that characterized his earliest collages. Each new medium became another way to expand the imaginative worlds he created.
This retrospective and invitational exhibition will showcase many works from Carleton and homage artworks created by local artists who knew him, were inspired by him, and appreciated his work. Many of the newly created works include bits and bobs from the late artist's estate.
