Earth Day’s 2026 theme is Our Power, Our Planet. The theme reflects the power we all have to protect our planet. It calls for environmental stewardship as a community effort focused on our health, economic security, and ecosystems. Efforts like the SSC’s funded projects or even small choices YOU make at home contribute to the progress we need in sustainability.

GreenTalks today will feature our last guests of the year: the Bluegrass Youth Sustainability Council! Students from high schools all across Lexington come together at BYSC to learn about sustainability and make real impacts in the community. Four students join us on the show to share their experiences.

SSC members celebrated the end of the academic year with a Spring Retreat at Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary. They participated in team building activities before holding their final meeting of the semester which consisted of a constitution review, five proposals, and director elections.

Thank you to our team of directors for your hard work leading the SSC throughout this year, and congratulations to our graduating seniors! We look forward to meeting more of our new members and continuing our work in the fall.

UK Sustainability Urban Forest Initiative WRFL Lexington

Our GreenTalks show from 2-3pm TODAY will feature Darin J. McNeil and Zachary Hackworth to share the importance of lichens! They will also discuss an upcoming research project in Robinson Forest, where they will monitor and analyze lichen species. Tune in to learn more!

Did you know you are contributing to sustainability initiatives at UK? $4 per semester out of each student’s tuition is included in the Environmental Stewardship Fee. The SSC votes to distribute this pool of over $200,000 each year to sustainability projects submitted by students, faculty, and staff.
