Studies estimate that children of alumni are 3-8 times more likely to be admitted to universities that consider legacy. Colorado recently banned legacy admissions for its public universities, and there's a growing movement among alumni at selective universities to discourage them from donating until their schools also abandon legacy admission.

Colorado has become the first state to stop public universities from practicing legacy admission enjoyed primarily by white and higher-income families.

Some potential big changes may soon be coming to the University of California system. There's a legislative proposal to significantly lower the percentage of out-of-state students to 10% and make up for the loss of revenue by increasing nonresident tuition.

As the University of California confronts record demand for admission, lawmakers are considering a plan to cut in half the share of nonresident students to make more room for locals.

There's some big news from the College Board today (https://allaccess.collegeboard.org/update-reducing-and-simplifying-demands-students):

1. SAT Subject Tests are cancelled effective immediately in the U.S.

2. The optional essay component of the SAT will be eliminated after June 2021.

3. There should now be more availability to take the SAT this spring as the cancelled subject tests will open up seats. In addition, the College Board is considering adding new testing dates in the fall if the pandemic continues to impact testing.

As students and colleges adapt to new realities and changes to the college admissions process, the College Board is making sure our programs adapt with them.

This week a court ordered the University of California schools to be test-blind for this admission cycle. That means that even if students submit test scores, the schools must disregard the scores. It will be very interesting to see how many universities follow suit.

The ruling turned on the judge's finding that disabled students have not been able to take the tests during the pandemic.

A couple big testing announcements just came out:

1. UMass will be test-optional for at least the next three years.

2. The ACT is supposed to open registration for fall dates this Monday, July 27, 2020. From what I've heard, registration will open at 12:01 am (yes, just after midnight on Monday morning), and they expect huge demand for testing sites, so if you are planning to take the ACT I recommend trying to register at that time.

Never a dull moment these days... On Monday the Department of Homeland Security declared that if colleges offer only online courses then international students at those universities will lose their student visas and need to leave the U.S. Yesterday MIT and Harvard sued to try to stop the new policy from taking effect.

A lawsuit suggests the policy’s intended goal “is to create as much chaos for universities and international students as possible.”

The upcoming 7/18/2020 ACT has been canceled at many sites across the U.S., including 3 of the 4 sites in Massachusetts....

The upcoming 7/18/2020 ACT has been canceled at many sites across the U.S., including 3 of the 4 sites in Massachusetts. Only Brookline High School remains open here in MA, and they've severely cut the number of students who will be allowed to test on that day. See the link for the full list of canceled sites.
