U.S. Space Force and Japan successfully launch U.S. sovereign space domain awareness payload aboard QZS-7 satellite. The launch marked the successful completion of the second and final mission of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System-Hosted Payload program.

The hosted payload was built and designed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory and tested alongside its Japanese host satellite over a two-year period.

Meet Andrew Dahir, a Systems Engineer at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where he tackles some of the most challenging problems facing our nation.

His long-term research focus is autonomous satellite navigation. At the Kwajalein Field Site, he works on critical projects, including upgrades to the TRADEX radar. Andrew shares, “The opportunity to challenge myself and develop innovative solutions under resource-limited conditions is both fulfilling and pivotal to my professional growth.”

-- 6 August 1971, the development plan for the Discrete Address Beacon System (DABS), later renamed Mode Select (Mode S), was issued. Developed at Lincoln Laboratory under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sponsorship, Mode S improved air traffic control by addressing critical challenges in radar surveillance and aircraft separation. The rapid growth of commercial aviation in the 1960s had caused significant interference between beacon replies and radar interrogations, threatening the reliability of aircraft surveillance in increasingly congested airspace.

Lincoln Laboratory designed Mode S to solve these issues by enabling radars to selectively interrogate individual aircraft using unique address codes assigned to improved transponders. The system also enhanced radar antennas and signal processing, reducing the number of air-to-ground messages needed to determine aircraft positions.

Today, Mode S is a global industry standard. The orange Mode S production antenna (pictured here) is now a familiar sight at major airports around the world. More than 100,000 aircraft are equipped with Mode S transponders, and over 900 Mode S radars are deployed worldwide.
