Highlights from  Associate Professor Bill Massie’s 3rd Year Design Build Studio.

The Design-Build project, “S Bridge Canopy,” reimagines the remains of an old swinging pedestrian bridge along the river. Led by Associate Professor Bill Massie, the studio transformed the existing stone piers into the foundation for a new public resting place and visual landmark.

Designed as a suspended tension structure spanning between the historic piers, the canopy offers shade and refuge for those along the river while creating a striking presence within the landscape. During the day, the hanging field of vertical tubes casts shifting shadows across the deck below. At night, integrated LED lighting illuminates the structure from beneath, capturing movement within the suspended elements as they sway in the breeze.

Blending adaptive reuse, atmosphere, light, movement, and environmental experience, the project demonstrates how design-build pedagogy can transform forgotten infrastructure into a new civic experience.

Highlights from Associate Professor Bruce Swetnam’s 3rd Year studio, where students presented their work on theDesign-Build House Prototype proposal atRobinson Forest—developed to support flood victims in Eastern Kentucky.

The studio explored housing design through research, fabrication, and hands-on engagement, with students also working onsite in Breathitt County as part of the project’s continued development and community-focused design efforts.
