🥞📖 Pancakes for Breakfast — a delicious way to build vocabulary!

Last week for Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, one of our instructors created her own family engagement activity across all of her Workplace English Language Development (WELD) classes: a "Pancakes for Breakfast" read-aloud! Students followed along as key cooking terms — like whisk, batter, flip, and measure — were introduced through the story, giving them the vocabulary and confidence to try making pancakes with their own kids at home.

It's a simple, sweet reminder that literacy shows up everywhere — even at the breakfast table. We love seeing our instructors create their own ways to bring families into the learning! 🙌

🗞️🏗️ Look what they built!

During Adult Education and Family Literacy week, one of our Lexington Workplace English Language Development (WELD) classes took on the newspaper structure challenge — and the results speak for themselves! Towers, bridges, and some seriously creative engineering, all built from nothing but newspaper and tape.

Along the way, students practiced talking through shapes, direction, and balance — turning a simple activity into real spatial reasoning and problem-solving. Take a look at what they came up with! 👇

🪙📊 Heads or tails? One class put their predictions to the test!

During Adult Education and Family Literacy week, One of our Versailles classes gave the Bottle Flipping Experiment their own twist — swapping bottles for coins! Students made predictions about the probability of landing on heads or tails, then flipped and graphed their real results to see how close their guesses came. (Bragging rights — and a bag of Skittles — went to the student with the best predictions! 🍬)

We loved hearing the class talk about taking this one home too — it's a simple way to spend time with grandchildren while sneaking in some real math practice.

Probability, prediction, and a little friendly competition — that's learning that sticks! 🎯

💙 What a week! Thank you to every adult learner, family, and instructor who made this year's Adult Education and Family Literacy Week so special.

From book exchanges and family mystery nights to freshly decorated classroom doors, this week was a beautiful reminder that learning is a journey we take together — as students, as families, and as a community.

🍳 Reading, writing, and math… in the kitchen? Yes, please!

Today's family activity is Cooking Together. Pick a simple recipe (brownies are always a hit!), read it aloud together, measure ingredients, and use sequencing words like first, next, then, last as you cook.

It's a delicious way to build vocabulary, practice measuring and counting, and make memories — plus you get a treat at the end. 🧁

⚖️ Which is heavier — a marble or a teddy bear?

Today's STEM activity: build a simple scale out of household materials (think a ruler balanced on a cup!) and compare the weight of different objects around your home. It's a hands-on way to introduce early math and measurement concepts.
