Dixie Elementary students raised $3,400 for Western Kentucky tornado relief! Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to drop loose change they've collected into one of four jars representing their sorted houses (Similar to Harry Potter, Dixie students are sorted into houses that represent their home away from home). The funds raised from the friendly Penny Wars competition will support families impacted by severe weather last weekend! Thank you to these students, staff, and families for their work to serve our neighbors in Western Kentucky!
Three of our seniors are recipients of scholarships from the Partners for Youth/Toyota Scholarship program! 🤩

Sophie Agbekpenou of Lafayette High received the $1,500 A.J. Newcomb Scholarship, which was named for a 2000 winner from Lafayette who died of heart transplant complications soon after graduation. César Mejía of Lafayette High and Karen Jordan of Paul Laurence Dunbar High/Opportunity Middle College each received $1,000 scholarships, which were matched by the Walton Family Foundation!

The students can use the money for college, trade school, or technical school, or for textbooks. Thank you to Partners for Youth and Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky for your incredible partnership and support of our students and district.

Due to the wildfires in Estill County, outdoor air conditions are in the fair range today- meaning exposure is unhealthy for sensitive groups. Our Health Services team recommended to school leaders that students with asthma or other respiratory conditions are not sent outside for recess or classroom activities. Our nurses are also aware of the heightened risk and are prepared to assist students as needed. We will continue to monitor the conditions and take additional steps if necessary.
