Last night, members of the UK Trumpet Studio had the opportunity to perform alongside the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra in a program filled with color, character, and powerful brass writing.
A special highlight was Leoš Janáček’s Sinfonietta, featuring the UKSO trumpet section prominently throughout the work.

The program featured fanfares of the Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1, vibrant Sinfonietta melodies, contrasting colors of Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari, and Elgar’s Enigma Variations.
We’re grateful for opportunities like these that allow our trumpet students to perform alongside the UKSO, learn from the musicians around them.

Today in Trumpet Studio, students and a trumpet ensemble shared their pieces and received constructive feedback and encouragement from their fellow trumpet players!
From unique and niche works to familiar favorites, these performances gave students the opportunity to challenge themselves, learn from one another, and grow as confident musicians collectively!

Today, students had the opportunity to listen to masterful brass ensemble performances from our UK School of Music brass faculty!

The University of Kentucky Faculty Brass Quintet featured Dr. Jason Dovel and Professor Abby Temple on trumpet, Professor Scott Leger on horn, Professor Brad Kern on trombone, and Dr. Brandon Smith on tuba.
The quintet performed a diverse program featuring works by Bach, Puccini, Bozza, Debussy, Kompanek, and Gray.

Experiences like these allow our students to learn from the artistry and musicianship of their faculty, connecting what they hear in performance to their own growth as musicians.

This past week, we had another great example of UK trumpet players making an impact all over the world!

UK trumpet alumnus Rui Li (Class of 2015) performed alongside Marcos Motta, Principal Trumpet of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra in Brazil! Motta was a guest in Beijing, China, performing with Rui’s orchestra, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) Orchestra.
Rui has been a member of the NCPA Orchestra’s trumpet section for the past 10 years.

What a beautiful afternoon of music from our Symphony Band and Wind Symphony!

These talented musicians performed works by Williams, Grainger, McAllister, and Giroux, including “Adventures on Earth” from E.T. performed by Wind Symphony.
After working on this music since the first day of classes, they performed at an incredibly high level today.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support us at the “Parents Day Concert”! Congratulations, Symphony Band and Wind Symphony, on a beautiful performance! So proud of what we accomplished today and excited for all that’s ahead!

Today in trumpet studio, Dr. Dovel introduced the “UK Trumpet Handbook,” sharing its history, daily routine, and how to develop an intentional practice process that works best for each musician’s individual needs.

Students also had the opportunity to perform, work through performance anxiety, and receive valuable feedback from their colleagues. As a studio, we’ll continue working together to support one another and positively hold each other to high standards.

We are so excited to announce that Sergei Nakariakov will be a guest artist at the University of Kentucky, February 13, 2027. We are so honored to have one of the world's greatest trumpet players in Lexington, KY! Save the date, this is one concert you do NOT want to miss!

Sergei Nakariakov, the russian born israeli trumpet player, has established himself as one of the most sought-after trumpet players on the international stage. Gifted with a rare combination of stunning virtuosity, a suave and velvet-toned sound and a deep sensitivity he was named “The Paganini of the trumpet” and “Caruso of the trumpet”. Nakariakov has single-handedly brought the flugelhorn to prominence on the concert platform. He has developed long-standing relationships with many of the world’s most respected leading orchestras, conductors and musicians.

Nakariakov’s repertoire covers not only the entire range of original literature for trumpet, but is continually expanding into broader territories, comprising many fascinating transcriptions and commissions by Jörg Widmann, Uri Brener, Peter Ruzicka, Enjott Schneider and Mikhail Pletnev, while he searches for ever new means of musical expression.

Yesterday was the UK Symphony Orchestras first rehearsal of Janáček’s Sinfonietta!
This piece features an exceptionally large brass section including four orchestra trumpets, nine ensemble trumpets, and a bass trumpet.
