Cadet Uses Disability to Motivate - VMI Alumni Agencies 06/12/2026

Determined and strong of character are two descriptors of a successful cadet at Virginia Military Institute, so when Cadet Andrew Kiddie ’29, who was diagnosed with deafness just before his second birthday, chose to come to arguably the hardest senior military college in the country, he used his disability as a motivator.

Cadet Uses Disability to Motivate - VMI Alumni Agencies Lou Ferrigno, a bodybuilder and actor best known for his role in “The Incredible Hulk,” has been profoundly deaf for most of his life. He once remarked, “I think my hearing loss helped create a determination within me to be all I can be and gave me a certain strength of character too.” When ...

Join us this fall for one of the most meaningful engagement opportunities in the VMI alumni community. The Cadet–Alumni Career Networking Forum brings together alumni from every industry and career stage to connect with each other—and to help cadets begin building the professional relationships that will shape their futures.

Your participation strengthens the VMI network. For alumni, it’s a chance to meet fellow graduates, share experience, and expand your own professional circle. For cadets, it’s often the first step in forming relationships that grow into mentorship, internships, and long‑term guidance.

Blandinos Establish Scholarships in Mechanical Engineering - VMI Alumni Agencies 06/09/2026

“So to me, what’s fun with the undergraduates is you’re there at the ‘aha’ moment, when they really start to see how what they learned really can be applied.” That’s what Col. Joseph “Joe” Blandino, Ph.D., professor of mechanical engineering, has to say about the joy he receives from teaching and mentoring cadets. It’s a joy he shares with his wife, Col. Joyce Blandino, Ph.D., also professor of mechanical engineering, who holds the distinction of being the first tenured female faculty member in the engineering disciplines at VMI. What’s more, the Blandinos are not only faculty members but generous supporters of VMI, as well, having established two scholarships in the mechanical engineering department.

Sadler ’66: “A Mindset of Helping Others” - VMI Alumni Agencies 06/05/2026

There aren’t many people who can say they’ve directly impacted 35,000 lives for the better—but in his quiet, unassuming way, retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Woodson “Woody” Sadler ’66 has done just that. Over the past 12 years, through his work with Rotary International, Sadler and his fellow Rotarians from western Virginia have distributed more than 5,000 wheelchairs to individuals in 14 Latin American nations. Add in all the cadets Sadler taught during his 33 years teaching mechanical and civil engineering as an adjunct professor at VMI, and the number of lives he’s touched grows even larger, like an ever-expanding web.

For Cadet Ethan Epstein ’28, the path to the Institute began when he decided to graduate from high school early after many college application deadlines had already passed. VMI was still accepting applications, and though he admitted he did not know much about VMI at first, “I knew it was a reputable college, and I knew it had a reputation for being difficult, and so that intrigued me and interested me. … The whole ‘don’t do ordinary’ thing really captured my attention, but I didn’t have any exposure to any alumni or anyone; I’m the first person in my family to go to VMI.”

After receiving a conditional appointment to the Institute in the mail and later being awarded an Institute Merit Scholarship, his decision became clear. “I just knew that’s where I belonged,” he said.

In September 2025, Whitney Matthews ’07 took her seat on the Alumni Association board as the Region IV Mid-Atlantic regional director. “It’s important for me to be involved with the Alumni Association because I want to show other women that they can be involved, too,” she said. “It’s a little bit of a sore subject that sometimes women don’t feel represented by the Alumni Association here, and I want to help rectify that. I want to show girls who are in school that this is another option to think about, that VMI isn’t just for males, it is for females.”
