Today, we celebrate the men and women of the United States Coast Guard and their unwavering commitment to protecting our nation's waterways, safeguarding maritime commerce, and serving communities at home and abroad.

At VMI, cadets interested in Coast Guard service can participate in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program (AUP)—the largest AUP in the nation. The program provides leadership development, hands-on training, and mentorship while preparing cadets to pursue commissioning opportunities and careers across a wide range of Coast Guard specialties.

What Gear Do You Need?

Preparing for Matriculation starts with the packing list.

✅ Bring all required items listed by VMI.
✅ Double-check sizes, quantities, and required documents.
✅ Label items when appropriate.

🚫 What NOT To Bring

Leave unnecessary valuables, excessive clothing, and prohibited items at home. Bringing extra items can create more stress and make it harder to stay organized.

📦 Organization Tip

Pack intentionally. Using labeled bags, packing cubes, or organizers can make it easier to find what you need during a busy first week.

💡 Incoming rats: Review the packing list early and don't wait until the last minute. Being prepared before you arrive will help make your transition to VMI smoother.

🔹 Lt. Col. Molly Kent represented VMI at the International Behavioral Neuroscience Society Annual Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa.

⭐ VMI earned 4.5 out of 5 stars on Money magazine's *Best Colleges in America 2026* list.

🎭 The VMI Community Theatre brought laughs to Gillis Theater with *The Odd Couple*.

🚁 Cadet Rye Jackson ’28 advanced drone detection research through the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute.

🏅 Cadet Syed Eshan Shah ’27 was named a finalist for a prestigious national scholarship.

🥎 The VMI Police Department hosted its annual "Guns and Hoses" charity softball game in support of a great cause.
