Did you know that every year, libraries across the United States celebrate Banned Books Week? The Transylvania Library participates in this annually because it's important to us as librarians to protect the freedom to read whatever you want and to fight against censorship. Below is an infographic from the American Library Association showing the breakdown of 156 challenges received in 2020 - books, media and displays are still being challenged today. Visit the library to see the display we've put up this week to highlight books that have been challenged, and to show the history of challenges to books throughout the years. You may even see some of your favorite books on display.

One year ago, we added resources and information to our website about Juneteenth. Today, it is now a federal holiday. There is still so much work to do, and a way to begin that work is to read and learn and educate yourself. Reach out to any librarian, and we’ll be more than happy to help you on this important journey.
Today is Juneteenth, an annual celebration of the day when a group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were notified of their emancipation. If you're curious about the origin of this day, or want to read more about it, the library has a resource guide just for you: https://libguides.transy.edu/juneteenth
