Three weeks until our first game! We are excited to get the season started!

We got the opportunity to attend London School of Economic’s summer program! Along with other W&L friends, we all took a course called, “AI in Business, Management, and Governance,” where we learned ethical development and data strategies using AI. Using a consulting perspective, we completed projects that required us to incorporate AI successfully into already existing business models as a tool for growth.

Living in London for 3 weeks, we were able to tour all around the city to places like a big Ben, watch Wimbledon matches live, and even get to watch England make a run in the world cup with the locals! On the weekends we traveled to amazing places like Mallorca, Spain and Paris, France to see more European countries!

“This summer, I have been interning at Greystar on the Development Portfolio Management team in Charleston, South Carolina. Our team manages a portfolio of development funds with a variety of investors, so I have gained experience in overseeing different deals. One of my favorite aspects of Greystar has been its culture, which feels very similar to W&L because of the strong alumni connection. I have also gained a lot of exposure to a wide variety of deals and have had the opportunity to work with teams across the company (acquisitions, development, portfolio management)!”

“This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a dental assistant in the Khayelitsha township of Cape Town, South Africa. I learned so much, not only about dentistry, but also about the incredible people and cultures that make this city so special.”

“Outside the clinic, I spent my free time hiking and exploring South Africa’s beautiful coastline. I’m incredibly grateful for this experience and for all of the people and places that made it unforgettable.”

“This summer, I learned a ton working as a Computer Science intern with the U.S. Department of Defense, contributing to multiple software development projects. But the real fun of my summer occurred on two weekends working as a Genius Sports Statistician for FIFA World Cup Games.”

“I attended a first round match in Philadelphia and the Argentina vs Switzerland quarterfinal in Kansas City. The job (although too fun to call it that) entailed collecting official real-time data from live matches. Using specialized software, I tracked everything from goals, assists, and shots to fouls, substitutions, cards, and VAR decisions as they happened. The live data is then used to feed official statistics, betting markets, media broadcasts, fan apps, analytics, and other platforms around the world.”

“The game on TV is broadcasted and watched a few seconds delayed to the live match, so it’s that quick time frame that this data becomes valuable. Genius sports is also responsible for bringing semi-automatic offsides to the soccer world. Thankfully, they are not the ones who devised the controversial ball touch sensing technology.”
