Students in Professor Ettensohn's Sedimentary Geology course ventured deep into Bowman this week for their grain size lab. Grain size is one of the most important clues geologists use to interpret how sediment was transported, deposited, and even later modified.

Have any favorite Bowman memories to share? Let's hear them!đź‘‚

Do the following words spark excitement and/or intellectual curiosity? Petrophysics, stratigraphy, structural geology, basin analysis, geophysics, geofluids, subsurface energy resources

If so, KGS is hiring a subsurface and energy geologist. At KGS, you'll have an opportunity to build and lead a research program and conduct mission-driven science to benefit the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

This summer, Prof. Frank Ettensohn was awarded Scouting America’s Silver Beaver Award by the Blue Grass Council. This award is approved by the National Court of Honor and represents Scouting America’s highest and most prestigious honor at the council level. It is presented to adult volunteer leaders who have made a lasting, positive impact on local youth through dedicated service and hard work. The Blue Grass Council, officially chartered in 1917, serves 55 Kentucky counties. While he may not have been there in the beginning, Frank has been an active participant in Scouting since his early youth in Cincinnati.

As an example of Frank's continued commitments to Scouting, read about his role this year in inspiring a new Eagle Scout's journey towards becoming a paleontologist: https://tr.ee/IYMQRRIL7U

Meet your 2026-2027 Geology Club officers! From the left we have Noah (Treasurer), Baileigh (Social Media Manager), Kendall (President), Mamie (Vice President), and Amerah (Secretary).

While these students are all EES majors, pictured here with some of their scholarship winnings at the EES Awards Lunch in May, being a major is not a requirement to join. Anyone is welcome! Students can keep-up-to-date with events, trips, and fundraisers by following them . You can also learn more about each officer and how they spent their summer in their recent series of introduction posts.

Thank you all for helping keep EES a fun and supportive community!

At the end of every academic year, students submit their photos and artwork to the EES Photo and Art Show to show off their work and win some cash. This event is sponsored by Geology Club and donations by faculty and friends of EES. For our newest department additions, that means you now have about eight months to collect amazing landscape, fieldwork, and microscope photos OR work on your art and crafting skills. This year’s audience choice award went to Megan Ginther, with her crocheted microscope titled “Soft Science”. Megan is a grad student in Dr. Spanbauer’s lab studying aquatic ecology and paleolimnology, so we look forward to seeing how the continued research inspires next year’s submission!

Pull up a chair or a carpet square and join EES faculty in a read aloud of Old Rock (is not boring) by Deb Pilutti. This children's book is about a rock's journey through time, and it's read here by some of our faculty researching the many different parts of that journey, involving volcanoes, glaciers, erosion, changes in climate, and more.

Registered children in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library receive one free book every month from birth until they turn five. Old Rock (is not boring) was first added to the Imagination Library Book List in 2021 and was sent to the oldest cohort, children who were born in 2016. It's still a part of the program, included this year as the bilingual (English-Spanish) version.

Therefore, we look forward to meeting our first old-rock-loving “Dolly Cohort” at the start of the fall semester in 2034 💙🪨🦋

This afternoon we bid an appreciative farewell to Meaghan, our Department Manager since 2022, before she heads out for her next adventure in Florida. There were many thanks, laughter, pizza, and even a sing-a-long led by Dr. Fryar on the ukulele. If you didn’t get a chance to join us, stop by her office tomorrow and thank her for helping keep EES running smoothly these past few years!

As we start the new academic year, we'd like to introduce some of the faces you'll be seeing around EES. To kick things off, meet the 2026-2027 G3 officers: President Austin, Vice President Zoe, and Secretary-Treasurer Jt.

This is a trio of multitaskers, as all three of these MS students are known for their ability to juggle multiple commitments. This time last year, Austin had just completed a Half Ironman, Zoe was a full-time UK employee for the first year of her MS, and Jt was a triple major for his undergrad. We have no doubt that this will be a successful year for G3!

G3, or the Geoscience Graduate Group, is a representative body for currently enrolled graduate students in EES. G3 is responsible for maintaining communication between the EES graduate students and the faculty, as well as interfacing with the Graduate Student Congress, as needed.

Thank you Austin, Zoe, and Jt for taking on these roles!
