FAMOUS PILOT FRIDAY: Harriet Quimby
In 1912, Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly solo over the English Channel, journeying from Dover, England, to Hardelot, France.
Born in Arcadia Township, Michigan, Quimby was also the first woman in the United States to obtain a pilot’s license when she successfully completed the requirements of the Aero Club of America. After earning her license, she joined the Moisant International Aviators, an exhibition team, and made her professional debut, earning $1,500, in a night flight over Staten Island before a crowd of almost 20,000 spectators.
Quimby had a major impact on women’s roles in aviation; she was a true pioneer and helped break down stereotypes about women’s abilities during the first decade of flight.

FAMOUS PILOT FRIDAY: Ken Griffey Jr.
Besides being one of the most prolific home run hitters in baseball history, Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. is also a pilot!
Griffey began training for his pilot’s license at age 36. He was initially exposed to flying as a teenager by his father, who was also a pilot. He purchased his first Cirrus aircraft in 2005.
At a recent NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), Griffey talked about how every segment of society should be aware of the opportunities for personal and professional growth in the aviation community. His advice for young people looking to make a career in aviation: “Do it. Don’t be a ‘what if.'”

FAMOUS PILOT FRIDAY: Alan Jackson
Country music star Alan Jackson knows “a lot about livin’,” which is why he became a pilot! While flying to and from gigs, Jackson learned how to fly by watching and learning from the pilot. He expands on this point in a post on his website, stating, “When I started flying to work, I got interested in watching the pilot who flew me and he taught me. At that time, we had a farm with a pretty big grass strip and I had a plane with amphibious gear, so I could land on water, the lake. I just kind of flew around Nashville.”
