AIRPORT REVEALED: Denver International Airport (DEN)! ✈️

A few quick facts about DEN:

• DEN opened on Feb. 28, 1995, replacing Denver’s former Stapleton International Airport.
• It has 6 runways, five measuring 12,000 feet and one measuring an incredible 16,000 feet.
• That 16,000-foot runway is the longest commercial runway in North America.
• DEN served a record 82.4 million passengers in 2025.
• The airport covers approximately 53 square miles, making it the largest airport site in North America.
• Its famous peaked terminal roof was designed to evoke the snow-capped Rocky Mountains.

FAMOUS PILOT FRIDAY: Enrique Iglesias

Reportedly, famous pop singer Enrique Iglesias purchased his plane before he even became a certified pilot. Don’t worry, he now flies legally. Iglesias says that he learned to fly his own plane, “an ultralight two-seater craft, while cruising between his home in Miami and Key Largo, Florida.”

• SFO opened in 1927 as Mills Field Municipal Airport of San Francisco.

FAMOUS PILOT FRIDAY: Harrison Ford

Perhaps more famous as the fictional captain of the Millennium Falcon, actor Harrison Ford is also a pilot in real life!

Ford first took flying lessons after college but ran out of money to do more. Once he reached his 50s (and with cash less of a problem!) he renewed his training in part to "see if I could learn something new.” Ever since, he has been collecting and flying vintage planes.

But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the Star Wars actor. Ford has been behind a number of incidents that could have been life-threatening. He was injured in 2015 after landing his World War II-era two-seater plane on a golf course just off the end of the runway at Santa Monica Airport. In 2017, he was investigated by the FAA after landing his yellow Aviat Husky on a taxiway at John Wayne Airport, mistaking the taxiway for a runway and narrowly missing a commercial airliner.

FAMOUS PILOT FRIDAY: Zara Rutherford

On Jan. 20, 2022, Zara Rutherford became the youngest woman to circumnavigate the globe solo, spending five months flying more than 32,000 miles across five continents. The British and Belgian aviator broke a record set in 2017 by Shaesta Waiz, an Afghan American pilot who was 30 at the time of her solo flight around the world.

On her journey, Rutherford faced myriad challenges: low ceilings over the Atlantic Ocean forced her to fly at 1,500 feet (her airplane was not IFR-certified); she lost radio contact for several hours on her way to Greenland; she had to hitchhike from a remote airfield in North Carolina after an unplanned landing; and bad weather and visa issues kept her grounded in Alaska for weeks before flying over the frozen tundra of Siberia.

“One thing I’ve learned on this trip — and I think this applies to everyone — is that you’re capable of more than you think you are,” she said.
