The Stars and Stripes became the official national flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, when the Second Continental Congress passed the first Flag Resolution during the American Revolution.
The resolution stated:
“Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
At that time:
* The 13 stripes represented the original 13 states.
* The 13 stars represented those states united as a new nation.
* Congress did not specify how the stars should be arranged, so early flags varied in appearance.
June 14 is now celebrated each year as Flag Day in the United States in honor of that 1777 adoption.

Dr. Rice serves as the Upper School Art Teacher at Founders Classical Academy, where she teaches Studio Art, Art History, Masterworks of Greece and Rome, and Senior Thesis. She earned her Ph.D. in Art History from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in ancient Greek and Roman art. Her passion for studying the great works of the past inspired her own interest in studio practice, allowing her to guide students in both the appreciation and creation of art.
At Founders Classical Academy, Dr. Rice helps students discover the enduring connection between truth, goodness, and beauty. Through the study of classical art and culture, she encourages students to think deeply, create thoughtfully, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.
Founders Classical Academy is more than a place of academic excellence—it is a community dedicated to cultivating wonder, responsible citizenship, and virtuous leadership through a distinctly classical approach to education. Our knowledge-rich curriculum invites students to pursue truth, embrace beauty, and grow into thoughtful, courageous young adults who believe in themselves and the good they can do in the world. Through teachers like Dr. Rice, students are inspired not only to learn, but to flourish.

Founders provides a classical education to its students. What exactly is classical education? In a nutshell, it is an education that is characterized by a traditional liberal arts and sciences curriculum and pedagogy, and an orientation towards truth, beauty, and goodness that aims to cultivate wise and virtuous citizens. Classical education is the same course of study that propelled Western Civilization upward in its civic institutions, personal liberty, philanthropy, economic enterprise, technological innovation, and relative safety and security. It is rooted in an approach that goes back to ancient Greece and Rome and developed over a long period of time in the West.

We provide the most time-tested methods of educating students, and at the same time, deliver the most cutting-edge education in America. Our students receive a “classical” education. The entire curriculum is based in the Classical Liberal Arts and Sciences with a strong emphasis on civic education.
Classical education aims to recover lost tools of learning in order to cultivate wise and virtuous men and women who will be responsible citizens of our republic.

Mr. Misko teaching Western Civilization.
What sets Founders apart? We combine a vigorous classical curriculum with moral formation, shaping students who think deeply, speak persuasively, and serve others with humility and gratitude.
Our classrooms are places where great ideas are explored, thoughtful discussion is encouraged, and character is cultivated. We prepare students not just for life after high school, but for lives of purpose, virtue, and hope.
