🎉 CONGRATULATIONS, ROBERT VEAL!

We’re proud to celebrate Robert Veal, founder of Heart of the City, on being selected for induction into the Lewisville High School Hall of Fame!

Robert’s commitment to serving others has helped shape Heart of the City’s mission to Love Others. Serve Others. Help Others. This recognition is a wonderful honor for Robert and a proud moment for our entire HOTC community.

Robert will be recognized during the Lewisville High School Homecoming Parade on October 14 and at the Homecoming football game on October 16.

Cooking up some strawberry muffins! Featuring two of our many wonderful FOF students.

We started by reading the recipe twice, and finding the supplies we'd need (measuring cups, whisk, etc). Then we washed our hands and got to measuring, mixing, and pouring.

The mix we used is great because there's no raw anything that goes into it, and they consistently come out great. Much more forgiving than your typical baking project.

The first stop on our professional learning workday was a huge hit with staff. For both the great inspiration and the delicious coffee & sweet treats 😋

Bitty & Beau’s Coffee is a human rights movement disguised as a coffee shop, where people with intellectual & developmental disabilities are valued in the workplace. It’s a place where diversity isn’t just appreciated, it’s celebrated. Bitty & Beau’s Coffee proudly employs 450+ individuals with disabilities nationwide.

80% of adults with disabilities are either unemployed or underemployed. Thanks to inclusive businesses like this one, more young people like those who attend transition services in FOF can have meaningful employment!

Did you know that the high school vocational elective and 18+ work together to bring you all many of the starfish products our program is known for???

The high school classes work together for production and FOF helps with delivery.

Here is a behind the scenes look at the production of the dyslexia awareness month t-shirts! After safety lessons and practice, students are ready to use the heat press. They use the measuring and ruler skills from highschool to determine the right placement for the transfers. There's a good amount of attention to detail and timing that goes into making sure the shirts come out just right.

This year's slogan is" One In 5 Depend On Me".

Dyslexia is a common and natural, neurobiological brain based difference, impacting 1 in 5 people (that's 20% of the population!). It is the most common learning disability. Many people with dyslexia are creative and capable, and work very hard to mask the challenges they may have, making it an invisible disability

This Dyslexia Awareness month of October, support our students by gifting a teacher you know one of our shirts!!

Boo bucket season is upon us!! Let the FOF students deliver yours! We'll deliver to any business, school, or residence within LISD boundaries!

The process from the many individual products to the boo bucket you see below involves dozens of steps and teamwork across multiple classes.

This is a product that is made accessible through the assembly line process. Staff look at the students abilities regarding multi step directions and can then provide the accommodations needed to scale or scaffold it to just the right level of difficulty.

It's Thursday which means a restaurant outing for these FOF students. Today's community based instruction was to IHOP across from the mall! Thank you IHOP for being such wonderful hosts for our meal today.

Students previewed the menu at home, came ready to order, and practiced social skills chatting with each other and the waitress 😊

Hotcakes, chicken and waffles, what more could you ask for on a beautiful Thursday 🌞

Huge shout out to this guy. One of his friends was having a bad day so he preset the oven, made the salad and drinks, then served the whole table.

Salad bags are a great starting point for young people who want to be helpful in the kitchen. It is a low risk way for them to be independent without safety risks associated with cutting vegetables or using a heat source.

Even making messes becomes a part of the learning process 😊 (cleaning red liquid is very easy due to its high visibility)
