This is an old recording of Igor Khudolei's Sonata-Fresco. It was a commissioned work at the 1990 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition. I was 18 years old at the time and was awarded the Bronze medal as well as a special prize for being the youngest finalist. I remember it being very hard to learn and memorize. Later on we learned that memorization wasn't required. However that is nothing compared to what happened at the Montreal competition in 1996.
Igor Khudolei was a terrific pianist and a composer. His most acclaimed recording as a pianist is that of Moussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.
Sonata-Fresco is a rare piece. Not often performed. As a matter of fact this may be the only recording of it on YouTube.
Enjoy!
